MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 8-14
CSU Bakersfield's Loren Gillilan and UNLV's Jesse Cawley have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 8-14.
Gillilan, a junior from Fort Collins, Colo. dominated in his two individual events as the 'Runners traveled to Las Vegas to take on UNLV. Gillilan swam in the 100 and 200 fly, winning both races by a combined 4.08 seconds. He also posted the fastest time in the conference in both the 100 fly (47.65) and 200 fly (1:50.40). On top of the impressive individual performance, Gillilan helped the 'Runners capture first place in the 400 medley relay (3:19.60). The team of Gillilan, Kris Rogic, Antonio Milin and Ryan Brimer currently hold the fastest 400 medley relay time among the conference.
Cawley, a junior from Portland, Ore., led his team to a dominating win over CSU Bakersfield as he took first in both diving events. Cawley posted the top score in the 1-meter dive (305.65) and grabbed his second gold of the day when he won the 3-meter diving event (329.40). The Oregon native started is coming off a third-place finish in the 3-meter event and a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter event at the WAC Championships last year.
WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 8-14
CSU Bakersfield's Autumn D'Arcy has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 8-15.
D'Arcy, a sophomore from Redlands, Calif., led the CSUB team with four first-place finishes. Individually, she picked up wins in the 50 free (23.76), 100 free (51.50) and 100 fly (54.26). D'Arcy also led the 'Runners 400 medley relay team to victory with a team time of 3:49.96. The California native holds the second-fastest time in the conference in both the 50 free and 100 free. D'Arcy also holds the league's top two times in the 100 fly with her opening meet time of 52.88 is good for fourth in the nation.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Other men's swimmer nominees: California Baptist's Jacob Leahy took first in the 50 free (20.65) at the Malibu Invite as the Lancers took on Texas Christian at Pepperdine University... Greg Raper of Seattle U helped his team collect first-place finishes in both the 400 free relay (3:06.35) and 200 free relay (1:24.30) at the Logger Relays in Puget Sound, Wash... UNLV's Cameron Castro tabbed first-place finishes in the 1000 free (9:37.07) and 500 free (4:37.44) as UNLV defeated CSU Bakersfield 194-104.
Other women's swimmer nominees: California Baptist's Isabella Rhodes took first in the 50 free (24.10) and 100 free (52.28) at the Malibu Invite... Alexa Hoeper of Seattle U helped lead her team to a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the Redhawks dominated at the Logger Relays in their first meet of the season.
Other men's diver nominee: CSU Bakersfield's Sam Stinson took second in the 1-meter diving event (281.70) in his collegiate debut against UNLV.
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
The California Baptist men's team competed in the Malibu Invite at Pepperdine University this week. The Lancers battled with Texas Christian University but ultimately fell to TCU 244-224. Jacob Leahy, Sean Foster and Robert Mosely all picked up individual wins. Leahy won the 50 free (20.65), Foster finished first in the 200 breast (2:07.31) and Moseley snagged a win in the 200 back (1:51.95). Quinn Birtles took home first in the 200 fly (1:51.85) while teammate Adityastha Wratsangka came in third (1:52.31). The Lancers' relay teams finished in second in both the 200 medley relay (1:33.00) and 200 free relay (1:24.59)
The Lancers' women's team also competed team at the Malibu Invite where they finished second among NCAA Division I teams. The women combined to produce a total score of 176.5 points, trailing only TCU. The duo of Nicole Cinega and Isabella Rhodes accounted for four of the Lancers' seven first-place finishes. Cinega took first in the 100 fly (57.40) and 200 fly (2:06.34) while Rhodes captured wins in the 50 free (24.10) and 100 free (52.28). Freshman Mackenzie Degn won the 200 free (1:52.12) as she made her collegiate debut. Faith Brazil and Mackenzie Mergel took first and third, respectively, in the 200 breast.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
CSU Bakersfield's men's team swam against fellow conference member UNLV in Las Vegas this weekend. The Roadrunners fell to the Rebels 104-194. Kris Rogic and Loren Gillilan led the men's team with victories in three individual events. Gillilan dominated in the 200 fly (1:50.40) and 100 fly (47.65), winning both events by at least two seconds. Gillilan's 100 fly time is the sixth-fastest time in the nation thus far. The team of Gillilan, Rogic, Antonio Milin and Ryan Brimer picked up another first place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:19.60). Diver Adam Estrella beat out his teammate Sam Stinson to finish second in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 263.40.
The CSUB women's team also competed with UNLV, falling 189-111 in their dual. Led by Autumn D'Arcy's three individual victories, the 'Runners put up a good fight. D'Arcy swam to victory in the 50 free (23.76), 100 free (51.50) and 100 fly (54.26). Alongside Tabea Mose, Lindsey Sohoel-Smith and Mikayla Popham, D'Arcy also led CSU Bakersfield's 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish (3:49.96). Sohoel-Smith out-touched UNLV's Skylar Moore in the 100 breast by a mere two-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:07.47.
IDAHO
The Idaho women's team got back in the pool to face the College of Idaho and Boise State. In their first dual, the Vandals prevailed over the College of Idaho 191-46 with Aimee Iwamoto leading the way. Iwamoto captured victories in the 200 IM (2:12.35) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.71). Katie Hale won in the 50 free in 24.52 seconds, out-touching College of Idaho's Maya Murphy by 0.04 seconds. The team of Hale, Iwamoto, Rylie Jones and Natalie Crocker combined to take first in the 200 medley relay (1:49.64). Kaling Phung had a strong showing in the 100 backstroke, winning by nearly two seconds in 59.90 seconds. Heather Carbon posted the top score in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 280.90 and 231.90, respectively.
The Vandals then competed against Boise State, falling 221-78. Iwamoto picked up the only win for Idaho as she finished the 100 breast in 1:06.25. Hale finished second in the 100 fly (58.65) with Jones finishing just behind her in third (58.69).
SEATTLE U
The Redhawks' men's team headed to Puget Sound, Wash. to compete in the Logger Relays in their season opener. Wins in three of the nine events gave SU the win with 197 points. The trio of Emmett Moore, Milan Saric and Shawn Fuji took first in the 3x100 fly (2:33.80). Saric was joined in the pool by Greg Raper, Isaac Parker and Tyler Goodspeed to finish with the top time in the 200 free relay (1:24.30). The 400 free relay team of Raper, Jake Goguen, Isaac Parker and Will Corona collected the team's third win as they finished the relay in 3:06.35. Seattle U added four more second-place finishes along with four third-place finishes at the relay meet.
The SU women's team also swam at the Logger Relays and, just as the men's team did, picked up the team win in dominating fashion. The Redhawks won an impressive seven of nine events, collecting 201 total points on the day. The team of Alexa Hoeper, Danika Himes, Bryn Lasher and Allison Plamondon opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:48.05). Anchored by Isabella Guadiamos, the Redhawks were victorious in the 300 fly relay (2:53.77). Seattle U also snagged first-place finishes in the 3x100 backstroke relay (3:02.38), the 200 free relay (1:41.86) and the 3x100 breaststroke (3:24.35). The Redhawks' picked up their seventh win as the team of Guadiamos, Himes and Caitlin Caruso touched the wall in 3:02.44 in the 300 medley relay.
UNLV
The UNLV men took on conference opponent CSU Bakersfield, picking up a dominating win in their home opener 194-104. The Rebel men were led by Richard Szilagyi, Cameron Castro and Jesse Cawley. Szilagyi grabbed wins in the 50 free (20.81) and 100 free (45.20). Castro picked up wins in the 500 free (4:37.44) and 1000 free (9:37.07). Cawley led the Rebel divers with wins on the 1-meter board (307.65) and 3-meter board (329.40). Sophomore Sam Willstrop collected a win in the 100 breast (57.39). Sean Gage added a second-place finish in the 50 free (20.81) and a first-place finish in the 200 breast (2:05.42). In the final event of the night, the team of Szilagyi, Bryan Chavez, Panos Bolanos and Steven Butler picked up a win in the 400 free relay (3:03.13).
