WAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Grand Canyon's Samuel McKenzie and CSU Bakersfield's Sam Stinson have been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 15-22.
McKenzie, a sophomore from Christchurch, New Zealand, picked up three individual wins in the Lopes two-day dual with Seattle U. McKenzie posted top times in the 100 free on both Friday and Saturday, finishing in 45.61 and 45.97, respectively. Both times rank among the 18 fastest 100 free times in the WAC this season. The sophomore collected his third first-place finish in the 200 free as he finished at 1:42.19. McKenzie also managed a second-place finish in the 50 free (21.39) on the first day, only five-hundredths of a second behind Seattle U's Greg Raper.
Stinson, a freshman from Damascus, Ore., tallied two top-three dives as the 'Runners competed against California Baptist, Pacific and UC San Diego at the Lancer Diving Invite. Stinson picked up a first-place finish in the 3-meter event with a score of 329.95, beating out seven other divers. The newcomer also added a third-place finish on the 1-meter board with a final dive score of 266.05. Stinson's 3-meter score is the top score in the WAC thus far, while his 1-meter mark ranks sixth in the conference.
Other swimmer nominees: California Baptist's Jacob Leahy grabbed a first-place finish in the 50 Free (21.02), and second-place finishes in both the 100 free (46.13) and 50 fly (22.19) at the CSU Bakersfield Sprint Classic and Roadrunner Invite... Kris Rogic of CSU Bakersfield helped lead his team to first-place finishes in the 800 free relay (6:44.26) and 400 free relay (3:02.23) while at the CSU Bakersfield Sprint Classic and Roadrunner Invite... Seattle U's Will Corona competed in the Redhawks dual with Grand Canyon where he posted first-place nods in the 200 and 400 individual medley, finishing in 1:53.71 and 4:04.94, respectively... Mitchell Hovis of Wyoming picked up wins in the 100 breast (55.72) and 200 breast (2:02.49) as the Cowboys defeated Air Force 159-141.
Other diver nominees: California Baptist's Evan Honer produced the top score in the 1-meter diving event (297.45) at the Lancer Diving Invite... Brendan Byrnes of Wyoming competed in the Cowboys dual with Air Force where he finished with the top score on the 3-meter board (308.10).
