MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 22-29
UNLV's Cameron Castro has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 22-29.
Castro, a freshman from Long Beach, Calif., helped lead his team to a win over California Baptist over the weekend behind a dominating performance in the 1000 freestyle. Castro finished the race at 9 minutes, 31.47 seconds, nearly six seconds faster than any other WAC swimmers this year. He also managed a second-place finish in the 500 free (4:33.54) as he finished only 0.2 behind his teammate Chris Mykkanen. Castro's 500 free time is also the second-fastest in the WAC this year with the third-fastest time more than three seconds slower than Castro. Castro also added a fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:13.46) as he completed one of the toughest triples in swimming, participating in the 1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 400 IM.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Other swimmer nominees: California Baptist's Jacob Leahy continued to show he's one of the WAC's fastest sprinters as he finished first in both the 100 freestyle (45.37) and 50 freestyle (20.52) in the Lancers' dual with UNLV on Oct. 27... Tyler Klatt of Wyoming posted a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke (51.42) and helped lead his team to a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:55.12).
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
The California Baptist men's and women's teams competed against UNLV over the weekend. The Lancer men fell 168.5 to 128.5 in their dual with the Runnin' Rebels. CBU's divers led the way as they went 1-2-3 in the three-meter diving event. Evan Honer led the way with Tyler Stevens and Zane Freeman claiming silver and bronze, respectively. Swimmers Jacob Leahy and Josh Walters turned in solid performances as well. Leahy placed first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 20.52 seconds and 45.37, respectively. He also led the Lancers to a first-place finish in both the 200 medley relay (1:30.82) and 200 freestyle relay (1:22.65). Walters landed a first-place tie in the 100 butterfly (50.17), while also joining Leahy in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
On the women's side, the Lancers fell to UNLV 220-80. Diver Savannah Uhlir turned in California Baptist's top diving performance as she placed second on the three-meter board and fourth on the one-meter board. Underclassmen Faith Brazil and Mackenzie Degn produced CBU's top swim performances. Brazil claimed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.3) and the 200 breaststroke (2:22.36), winning both events by nearly two seconds each. Degn turned in a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:04.43) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:53.8)
WYOMING
The Wyoming men traveled to Golden, Colo., to take on Colorado School of Mines. The Cowboys won the dual 111.5 to 93.5 with big performances coming from Ryan Netzel, James Bouda, Tyler Klatt and Thomas Diaz. Netzel picked up Wyoming's first individual win as he touched first in the 1000 freestyle (9:51.73), finishing over ten seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Bouda earned gold in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 21.22 seconds. Klatt added another first-place finish as he won the 200 individual medley (1:55.12). Diaz continued the Cowboys' winning ways as he finished ahead of the pack in the 500 freestyle (4:46.89).
UNLV
The UNLV men picked up their second dual win as they defeated California Baptist in Riverside, Calif. The Rebels 168.5 to 125.5 with individual wins coming from a slew of UNLV swimmers and divers including Hayden Hemmens, Ogi Maric, Christopher Mykkanen, and Ivan Zukov. Hemmens took first in the 200 freestyle (1:39.04). Maric picked up the win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.43. Mykkanen beat out teammate Cameron Castro to take first in the 500 freestyle (4:33.35). Zukov turned in a first-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:04.32). Junior Jesse Cawley led the Rebel divers with a second-place finish on the three-meter board.
