SEATTLE U'S COGSWELL NAMED WAC GOLFER OF THE MONTH
Grand Canyon's Filip Lundell has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for Feb. 6 to Feb. 12.
Lundell, a senior from Vellinge, Sweden (Sundsgymnasiet HS), led wire-to-wire to claim the UC Irvine Invitational medalist award. The Swede shot an 8-under-par 208 over 72 holes to earn the individual title by four strokes over his nearest competitor. Shooting sub-par in each round, he finished the tournament with 14 birdies and 34 pars to lower his scoring average this season to 72.2. As a team, the Lopes finished second, trailing only Cal State Fullerton on the team leaderboard.
Other men's nominees: California Baptist's Ben Hallam shot a 2-over-par 218 to tie for seventh at The Farms Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. … Utah Valley's Gabe Lysen recorded his first top-10 finish of the season, shooting a 1-under-par 143 to tie for eighth at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational.
ON THE TEE
The spring schedule is underway with five of eight teams having opened up 2019 competition. This week is relatively light with NM State in Houston at the All-America Intercollegiate and UT Rio Grande Valley at the LaTour Intercollegiate in Mathews, La.
BY THE NUMBERS
Early in the spring schedule, Grand Canyon holds the top team stroke average at 290.4 through 18 rounds. Kansas City is second at 291.0, followed by Californai Baptist in third at 293.3. Individually, Kansas City's McCain Schellhardt has the top stroke average at 71.6 per round. Grand Canyon's Filip Lundell is second at 72.2, followed by California Baptist's Ben Hallam (72.3), UT Rio Grande Valley's Alvaro Hernandez (72.3) and NM State's Mike McGilton (72.6).
WELCOME TO THE WAC
California Baptist is the newest member of the Western Athletic Conference as the Lancers begin the four-year transition to NCAA Division I. While CBU will not be eligible to compete for the team title until the 2023 WAC Championship, the Lancers will be able to compete as individuals at the WAC Championship.
CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE
The 2018 WAC Men's Golf Championship heads to the Pacific Northwest and Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash. Built in 1966, Oakbrook Golf Club features hundreds of oak trees and immaculate turf conditions. In 2012, Oakbrook opened its doors to the public after 56 years of private operations. Ryan Moore, PGA Tour professional and Tacoma native, brings his knowledge of championship golf to Oakbrook Golf Club through Ryan Moore Golf ownership, to continually improve the golf course and elevate the overall guest experience.
