WAC Golfers of the Week Announced
DENVER – Chicago State's Austin Dobrescu and Utah Valley's Kaylee Shimizu have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 20 to Feb. 26.
Dobrescu, a senior from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada (Vincent Massey HS), won his first event of the spring, shooting a 2-under-par 214 to earn medalist honors at the Alabama State Spring Kickoff. He was under par for two of his three rounds, using a 1-under-par 70 in the first round and 2-under-par 70 in the second round to build a sizable lead. Finishing with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round, he won the tournament by five strokes. As a team, the Cougars finished fifth with a 68-over-par 932.
Shimizu, a junior from Wailuku, Hawai'i (Baldwin HS), was the top WAC golfer at the Grand Canyon Women's Spring Invitational, shooting a 3-over-par 219 to finish eighth among 108 golfers. The junior improved each round, shooting a 3-over-par 75 in the opening round, a 1-over-par 73 in the second round and a 1-under-par 71 to move into the top 10 in the final round. Her weekly scoring average of 73.0 was nearly three strokes better than her average of 75.9 coming into the week. As a team, the Wolverines finished in sixth place among 20 teams.
Other men's nominees: California Baptist's Ben Hallam tied for ninth at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, firing an even-par 144 to finish three strokes back of the lead … Grand Canyon's Trevor Lampson led the WAC in stroke average on the week, shooting a 3-under-par 213 at the John Burns Intercollegiate … Kansas City's McCain Shellhardt shot a 2-over-par 218 to tie for ninth at the Louisiana Classics in the Roos' spring opener … UT Rio Grande Valley's Alex Summers tied for 13th at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, shooting a 1-over-par 145 in the rain-shortened event.
Other women's nominees: California Baptist's Yifei Wang tied for 28th at the Grand Canyon Women's Spring Invitational, shooting a 10-over-par 226 … Grand Canyon's Siripatsorn Patchana fired a 6-over-par 222 at the GCU Invitational to tie for 12th place and lead all players playing as individuals … Kansas City's Theresa de Bochdanovits led the Roos with a 10-over-par 152 at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational … NM State's Pun Chanachai carded a 10-over-par 226 at the prestigious Bruin/Wave Invitational to tie for 12th place and finish ahead of several nationally-ranked golfers … UT Rio Grande Valley's Julie Lucio had a share of the lead after the first day of the Islander Classic before finishing fourth with a career-best 9-over-par 225.
