WAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Ashley Hughes and Diamond Thomas have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 12-18.
Hughes, a junior from Chicago, Ill., broke the program record and finished second in the 200-meter dash at the UTSA Invitational. Her time of 54.37 ranks eighth-best in the nation this season.
Thomas, a senior from Houston, Texas, threw the third-best Discus mark and fifth-best Shot Put in program history. She finished third in Discus with a mark of 48.90 meters, fourth in Shot Put tossing it 13.98 meters, and fifth in the Hammer Throw at 48.28 meters. She ranks 27th for Shot Put and 58th for Discus throughout the NCAA.
Other track nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Riley Slayton took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.38… Dora Filipovic of Grand Canyon ranks first in the WAC for the 200-meter and 400-meter run as well as 18th in the 400 and 32nd in the 800 in the nation… NM State's Crissey Amberg placed second at the UTEP Springtime and ranks third in the WAC in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.95.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Courtney Logan took third in the Shot Put at the Willie Williams Classic with a mark of 14.43 meters which is best in the conference… Taniya Mitchell of NM State posted a new personal-best in the Hammer Throw with a WAC-leading toss of 54.46 meters.
