This Week in WAC Outdoor Track & Field - March 20
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
CSU Bakersfield's Curt Threlkeld and Utah Valley's Albert MacArthur have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 12-18.
Threlkeld, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., recorded the top 800-meter time in the NCAA for the third straight week. He took first at the Hornet Invitational finishing with a time of 1:49.74. This is his fourth first-place finish this season and third week in a row being named athlete of the week.
MacArthur, a junior from Port Orchard, Wash., finished best in the long jump at the UNLV Spring Invitational. His jump of 7.68 meters is currently second-best in the nation. He also set a new program record in his first outdoor competition of the season.
Other track nominees: Matthew Brown of Chicago State won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.45 which is best in the WAC and a new school record… Grand Canyon's Daniel Flores ranks 24th in the nation in the 1,500 and 800 meter runs… Yashawn Hamilton of UT Rio Grande Valley finished fourth in the 100-meter dash and tenth in the 200-meter at the UTSA Invitational.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Jorden Okyere broke the school record in the Shot Put and Discus and leads the WAC in the Shot Put… Michael Gonzalez of UT Rio Grande Valley placed top-ten in the Shot Put, Discus, and Hammer Throw with his best finish being third in the Shot Put.
WOMEN
UT Rio Grande Valley's Ashley Hughes and Diamond Thomas have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 12-18.
Hughes, a junior from Chicago, Ill., broke the program record and finished second in the 200-meter dash at the UTSA Invitational. Her time of 54.37 ranks eighth-best in the nation this season.
Thomas, a senior from Houston, Texas, threw the third-best Discus mark and fifth-best Shot Put in program history. She finished third in Discus with a mark of 48.90 meters, fourth in Shot Put tossing it 13.98 meters, and fifth in the Hammer Throw at 48.28 meters. She ranks 27th for Shot Put and 58th for Discus throughout the NCAA.
Other track nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Riley Slayton took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.38… Dora Filipovic of Grand Canyon ranks first in the WAC for the 200-meter and 400-meter run as well as 18th in the 400 and 32nd in the 800 in the nation… NM State's Crissey Amberg placed second at the UTEP Springtime and ranks third in the WAC in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.95.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Courtney Logan took third in the Shot Put at the Willie Williams Classic with a mark of 14.43 meters which is best in the conference… Taniya Mitchell of NM State posted a new personal-best in the Hammer Throw with a WAC-leading toss of 54.46 meters.
THIS WEEK IN WAC OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
CHICAGO STATE
The Cougars had a strong showing in sprints at the Texas Southern Relays. The men's 4x100 meter relay broke the school record for the second week in a row finishing in 40.88. They finished in second behind the University of Houston. The time leads the WAC this season. Matthew Brown won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.45. He broke his own school record and is best in the conference. Recordo McKenzie followed Brown earning a third-place finish. Saskkia Wiggin earned fourth in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.41.
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes posted a number of records in their first outdoor meet of the season. Paige Hildebrandt earned the first running the 1,500-meter in 4:34.04 and taking second. Jorden Okyere tossed a personal-best in the Hammer Throw and broke the school record in Discus. He broke the record with a 47.79-meter mark. On day two of competition, Okyere also broke the school Shot Put record. Alexa Hokanson broke her own school record in the 800-meter crossing at 2:09.34. She has the top time in the WAC.
NM STATE
The Aggies took home a few first place finishes from the UTEP Springtime. Yemisi Oroyinyin won the Shot Put with a throw of 14.35m. Elizabeth Mendoza finished best in the 400-meter hurdles finishing in 1:05.00. Ocean Stevens, Regina Marquez, and Francis Hernandez swept the 3,000-meter, respectively.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U men finished fourth while the women claimed fifth at the Doris Heritage Track Festival. The Redhawks posted 25 top-five finishes and 29 personal-bests. Siobhan Rubio was best in the 800-meter run earning second place with a time of 2:15.13. Michelle Newblom ran a 15.59 in the 100-meter hurdles, good for third. For the men Stewart Keene won the 800-meter run in 1:56.17. Isaiah Payne ran a 11.04 in the 100-meter dash, a personal best and second-place finish. Jacques Hebert earned second in the 1500-meter run crossing at 3:55.96.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UTRGV had a solid showing at the UTSA Invitational. Ashley Hughes set a program record in the 400-meter dash. She took second with her time of 54.37. Dai'ja Coleman also took second in the triple jump witha 12.11m leap.
UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines were led by Albert McArthur in their opening outdoor meet of the season. He jumped 7.68m in the Long Jump placing him second best in the nation. Alex Lawrence finished best in the Pole Vault clearing 4.95m. Andre Jones took first-place in the 400-meter hurdles crossing at 53.31. Daven Russell took second in the Shot Put and Lamek Keditukei was runner-up in the 800-meter. Hannah Branch claimed the 5,000-meter race in 16:43 and Savannah Neuberger was best in the 1,500 at 4:30.95. Aisha Graham-Perez found her spot on the first-place podium in the 800-meter run. Courtney Paddock was runner-up in the 400-meter in a time of 56.28.
TOP FIVE
CSU Bakersfield's Curtis Threlkeld leads all 800-meter runners nationally with his time of 1:49.74. Albert MacArthur also made his way into the top rankings in his first outdoor meet of the season. He jumped 7.69 meters, second best in the nation.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2019 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship will take place in Orem, Utah May 9-11. Utah Valley is set to host at the Hal Wing Track & Field.

On the field side of things, Corbin Chronister threw a personal best in the Hammer Throw reaching 198'5". He is ranked third-best in the nation and sixth all-time for the program.
