WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Kansas City's Bryce Miller and CSU Bakersfield's Tim Van Horn have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 2-8.
Miller, a senior from Ashland Wis., won the 3,000-meter Steeplechase at the Husker Spring Invitational. He finished in a time of 9:24.41, fourth-best in the WAC this season.
Van Horn, a senior from Gilroy, Calif., jumped 2.11 meters in the High Jump for the second time this season. He took first at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational with the leap. In the conference, Van Horn leads all others while tying for 36th in the nation.
Other track nominees: Maxime Gardes of UT Rio Grande Valley placed first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and helped in recording the sixth-best 4x100-meter relay time in program history.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Perry Adderley recorded the third-best Shot Put mark in school history and also sits second-best in the WAC for the Shot Put and Discus… Michael Gonzalez of UT Rio Grande Valley placed top-ten in all three throwing events with his best being third in the Shot Put at the South Texas Showdown.
WOMEN
Grand Canyon's Niki Xydona and UT Rio Grande Valley's Diamond Thomas have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 2-8.
Xydona, a junior from Thiva, Greece, broke the program record for the Heptathlon by 313 points. She tallied 4,985 points to finish 11th. She posted personal-bests in the 100 Hurdles, 200-meter dash and 800-meter while her best finish came in the Javelin Throw at third. Xydona ranks best in the WAC and 31st in the country.
Thomas, a senior from Houston, Texas, recorded the second-best Shot Put mark and third-best Discus throw in program history. She took first in all three throwing events at the South Texas Showdown. Thomas reached 14.92. meters in the Shot Put, 50.60 meters in the Discus, and 50.61 meters in the Hammer. She currently leads the WAC in the Shot Put and Discus and is third in the Hammer.
Other track nominees: Kansas City's Carolyn Ross set a new school record in the 400-meter Hurdles and posted the top time in the WAC this season at 1:00.17… Ashley Hughes of UT Rio Grande Valley broke the program record in the 400-meter for the second time this season with a time of 54.35.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Traci Mills jumped 11.88 meters in the Triple Jump, good for third-best in the conference.
THIS WEEK IN WAC OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELCALIFORNIA BAPTIST
CHICAGO STATE
The Cougars competed in the Hilltopper Relays. Matt Brown took third in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter while Ricordo McKenzie took ninth in the 100 and tenth in the 200. Carlton Sims also earned top-ten taking ninth in the 400-meter dash. The 4x100-meter relay notched a third-place finish in 40.79.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
The 'Runners landed two first-place marks and ten-season bests at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Corbin Chronister threw a personal-best in the Discus and took first. Tim Van Horn also earned gold in the High Jump. Bianca Frausto placed second in her heat of the 5,000-meter recording a personal-best and placing her 18th on the program depth chart.
GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon had seven multi-event athletes compete in the Jim Click Shootout over the weekend. Niki Xydona led the way breaking the school record with a personal-best 4,962 points. She finished 11th and had personal-best marks in the 100-meter Hurdles, 200-meter dash, and 800-meter run.
KANSAS CITY
Kansas City traveled to the Husker Spring Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. Three women posted top-five all-time marks in school history. Matia Finley notched the fifth best Shot Put mark at 13.14 meters and Katherine Hanners ran a 4:40.57 in the 1,500-meter run to also earn fifth in the record books. Carolyn Ross won the 400-meter hurdles in a school record time of 1:00.17. On the men's side, Max Selbach won the 3,000-meter run in 8:50.40 and Bryce Miller won the 3,000-meter Steeplechase crossing at 9:24.41. Perry Adderley tossed the Shot Put 16.58 meters, good for fifth place and third in program history.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UT Rio Grande Valley faced off against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the first South Texas Showdown. The women won by a score of 95.5-70.5 while the men fell 98-72. Ashley Hughes led the women breaking the 400-meter program record for the second time this season clocking in at 54.35. Hughes also helped the 4x400-meter relay to a victory. Diamond Thomas ran the throwing events winning all three. She tossed the Shot Put 14.92 meters, second-best in program history, and the Discus 50.60 meters, third-best in school history. Dai'ja Coleman won the triple jump with a distance of 12.26 meters. Three men also entered the program record books. Dimitris Levantinos recorded the fourth-best 110-meter Hurdles time at 14.71 and Jon Zapata vaulted 4.45 meters to secure the fifth-best Pole Vault mark. The men's 4x100-meter relay also set the sixth-best school record time in 42.54.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2019 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship will take place in Orem, Utah May 9-11. Utah Valley is set to host at the Hal Wing Track & Field.
