WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Utah Valley's Andre Jones and Grand Canyon's Jesse Newman have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 9-15.
 
Jones, a junior from Meridian, Idaho, took first in the 400-meter Hurdles at the Utah Springs Classic. His time of 51.81 ranks him best in the WAC. He is also placed 39th in the nation.
 
Newman, a junior from Aloha, Ore., won the Javelin throw at the UCSD Triton Invitational. He was best out of 21 competitors tossing it 71.57 meters. His throw leads the conference and is tenth best throughout NCAA Division I. Newman set a new school record while beating his previous personal-best by just under two meters.
 
Other track nominees: California Baptist's Timothy Legemet ran his first collegiate 1,500-meter race and took first in a time of 3:59.17… Daniel Flores of Grand Canyon notched his first collegiate win and posted a personal-best in the 800-meter run… Kansas City's Jaquez Perry ran a 48.10 in the 400-meter ranking him second in the WAC and fifth in school history.
 
Other field nominees: Corbin Chronister of CSU Bakersfield swept all three throwing events at the SBCC Easter Open Invitational… Utah Valley's Daven Russell won the Shot Put and Hammer Throw tallying five first-place finishes in the 2019 outdoor season. 
 
WOMEN
NM State's Camira Haughton and Kansas City's Matia Finley have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 9-15.
 
Haughton, a junior from Bohemia St. Ann, Jamaica, ran a personal-best in the 400-meter finishing in 54.77. She took home gold at the Ross Black Invitational and placed herself fifth-best in the school record books. Haughton's time is also second-best in the WAC this season.
 
Finley, a senior from Lawrence, Kan., broke her own school record in the Discus posting a throw of 51.92 meters. The mark was good for third at the John McDonnell Invitational. She leads the WAC and is 48th in the nation. Finley also took fifth in the Shot Put and 11th in the Hammer Throw.
 
Other track nominees: California Baptist's Fruzsina Ladanyi took second place and set a new personal-best in the 800-meters finishing in 2:14.24… Naudia Dawson of Grand Canyon earned second in the 100-meter and third in the 200-meter dashes placing third and fourth, respectively, in the conference… Kansas City's Carolyn Ross finished seventh in the 100-meter Hurdles and fifth in the 400-meter Hurdles as she continues to lead the WAC in the 400-meter Hurdles.
 
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Sarah Root recorded a personal-best and placed herself second in the WAC jumping 6.00 meters in the Long Jump… Taniya Mitchell of NM
State took first in the Hammer Throw when she posted a mark of 58.42 meters, good for a personal-best and second in the school record books ... UT Rio Grande Valley's Idatonye Cheetham-West jumped 6.40 meters in Long Jump which ranks best in the conference and seventh throughout the NCAA.
 
THIS WEEK IN WAC OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
California Baptist men had five top-ten finishes while the women tallied six. Timothy Legemet won the 1,500 meter in 3:59.17 and Dennis Messmer followed just .42 seconds behind. Cody Beeson and McMarshall Hartzenberg also placed top ten. Adriel Barajas took sixth in the 800-meter in a time of 2:01.60. For the women, Fruzsina Ladanyi took second in the 800-meter crossing at 2:14.24 and Natalia Novak followed winning third. The 1,500 meter brough five top-11 runners with Emilie Renaud leading the way in fourth. Anna Mate was next best taking sixth.
 
CHICAGO STATE
Chicago State had a strong relay showing at the Benedictine University Relays. The women's sprint medley relay dominated their competition followed by the men. The men's team took gold along with the men's 4x100 relay claiming the best time. The Cougar men's 4x100 relay continues to lead the WAC with their time of 40.79 seconds.
 
CSU BAKERSFIELD
The 'Runners had a strong showing at the SBCC Easter Open Invitational posting seven first-place marks. Corbin Chronister swept three events earning gold in the Hammer, Discus, and Shot Put. Jessica Taylor also made her presence known in the Hammer winning first and tossing a personal-best. Antonia Beason sits tied for tenth in the program records for High Jump and Joselito Flores earned first in the same event. Emony Harrison won the Javelin Throw and She'Pree Brevli jumped a personal-best taking second in the Long Jump.
 
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes broke more records and had a couple big performances over the weekend. Adrian King jumped 7.51 meters to  win the Long Jump. Daniel Flores won the 800-meter run and posted the second-best time in school history. Paige Hildebrandt set the school record in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:33.1 and Moataz Hassan broke his program-best in the Shot Put by two centimeters. Jesse Newman threw 71.57 meters to win the Javelin Throw and break the program-record.
 
KANSAS CITY
Matia Finley led the way for the Roos breaking her own school record in the Discus with a 51.92 meter throw. Traci Mills took third in the Long Jump and Triple Jump while Rebecca Finley also tallied a third-place finish in the Shot Put. Jaquez Perry notched the second-best WAC time in the 400-meter dash in 48.10. Ryan Parson posted the fifth-best 1,500-meter time in the WAC at 3:53.99.
 
NM STATE
The Aggies' time at the Ross Black Field of Champions was cut short due to weather but they managed to get a few solid performances in. Francis Hernandez took eighth in the 1,500-meter run when she ran a 5:21.56. Kayli Farmer placed third with a throw of 39.12 meters in the Javelin. Andi Harrelson and Alyssa Covarrubia followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.
 
SEATTLE U
Seattle U snagged a couple individual victories at the St. Martin's Jay Hammer Invitational. Shannan Higgins took first and set a personal-best in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase in a time of 11:58.10. Caylah Lunning also earned gold in the Long Jump leaping 5.45 meters. Multiple Redhawks also set personal-records in a variety of events.
 
UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines split their time between meets at Weber State and the University of Utah and earned 13 first-place titles. Alex Lawrence won the Pole Vault while Jordan Carder took first in the 100-meter dash. Utah Valley won the Triple Jump and Long Jump split between Albert MacArthur and Aaron Johnson, respectively. Andre Jones won the 400-meter Hurdles and Zane Farrer took care of business in the 110-meter Hurdles also finishing best. Jeffrey Duvinston won the High Jump and was closely followed by Seth Krauss who took second. In throwing events, Daven Russell won the Shot Put and Sean York claimed the Javelin. Seth Dabb rounded it out for the men winning the 400-meter dash. On the women's side, Anna Parkinson jumped 3.55 meters in the Pole Vault moving into the top-three overall in school history. Aisha Graham-Perez finished runner-up in the 800-meter. Savanna Reilly-Routsong threw the Hammer 48.91 meters to win the event.
 
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
Idatonye Cheetham-West led the Vaqueros in the first day of competition at the UIW Invitational. She recorded a jump of 6.40 meters in the Long Jump. This mark places her first in the WAC, seventh in the NCAA, and sets a new program record. Alexandrea Hurst, Diamond Thomas, and Samariae Bonds posted the top-three WAC marks in the Shot Put. Thomas also threw the best Hammer distance in the conference at 57.05 meters. Kyra Keurentjes won the 1,500-meter run in 4:41.76. In day two of competition, Thomas made her presence known once again, this time in the Discus. She won the event with a throw of 51.05 meters. Felicia Wills also won the 400-meter Hurdles and Kyle Marroquin won the 110-meter Hurdles. Max Carmona claimed best in the 800-meter run finishing in 1:53.60.
 
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2019 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship will take place  in Orem, Utah May 9-11. Utah Valley is set to host at the Hal Wing Track & Field.
