WAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Kansas City's Carolyn Ross and UT Rio Grande Valley's Diamond Thomas have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 16-22.
Ross, a junior from Scottsbluff, Neb., notched a school record in the 400-meter Hurdles at the Kansas Relays. She won the event in a time of 59.73, good for best in the WAC. Ross is the first Roo to break the one-minute mark in program history. She also ranks 55th throughout the NCAA.
Thomas, a senior from Houston, Texas, finished second in the Discus and third in the Hammer at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight. The senior tossed a mark of 52.73 meters in the Discus to rank second in program history. Thomas is best in the conference for the Discus Throw and second-best in the Hammer. She also ranks 45th in the nation for Discus.
Other track nominees: California Baptist's Anett Somogyi posted the third-best 5.000-meter time in school history at 16:39.13… Alexa Hokanson of Grand Canyon set a school record, personal record, and the best WAC time this season in the 800-meter crossing at 2:07.01…NM State's Lashira Tremble set a personal-best in the 200-meter dash and leads the WAC… Ashley Hughes of UT Rio Grande Valley broke the 400-meter program record for the third time this season and ranks 80th in the NCAA.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Chesney Walker notched the fifth-best Heptathlon score in school history tallying 4,118 points and winning the Javelin Throw… Taniya Mitchell of NM State broke the Hammer program record that had stood since 2006 with a mark of 59.56 meters… Seattle U's Caylah Lunning posted a program record in the Long Jump at 5.76 meters.
