This Week in WAC Outdoor Track & Field - April 3
WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Kansas City's Quinlan Moll and Utah Valley's Albert MacArthur have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 19-25.
Moll, a senior from Springfield, Mo., ran the fastest time in the WAC in the 10,000-meter. His time of 29:37.54 earned him 16th out of 108 competitors and is the second-fastest in program history. Moll's time ranks 73rd in the nation.
MacArthur, a junior from Port Orchard, Wash., earned gold in the Long Jump and Triple Jump at the UVU Collegiate Invitational. He is ranked top-20 in the nation in both events after making his way in at 19th in the Triple Jump with a mark of 15.48 meters. MacArthur is 13th throughout the NCAA in the Long Jump after jumping 7.69 meters at the UNLV Invitational. In the outdoor season, MacArthur has claimed four first-place titles.
Other track nominees: Simon Bedard of California Baptist ran the 10,000 meter in 29:57.86, good for second-best on the program all-times list… Gabe Gaeta of CSU Bakersfield earned second and posted the second-best time in the conference in the 400-meter Hurdles… Bryson Benjamin of Grand Canyon ran the fastest 400-meter time in the WAC in 48.27.
Other field nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Corbin Chronister tossed a personal best in Shot Put reaching 16.21 meters, third-best in the conference… Moataz Hassan of Grand Canyon broke the school record in the Shot Put and ranks fourth in the WAC… Kansas City's Lukas Van Der Watt notched the top Pole Vault mark in the WAC at five meters.
WOMEN
California Baptist's Anett Somogyi and Grand Canyon's Madelyn Lundberg have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March March 26 – April 2.
Somogyi, a junior from Veszprem, Hungary, ran the 10,000-meter in 34:06.91 destroying the old program record. She now holds the school record in the 3,000 and 10,000 meter. Somogyi leads the conference in the 10,000- and 5,000-meter runs.
Lundberg, a sophomore from Grand Canyon, posted the top mark in the WAC for Pole Vault this season. She jumped 4.03 meters for the third time in her career and earned gold. Lundberg ranks 41st in the nation.
Other track nominees: CSU Bakersfield's Riley Slayton took second in the 400-meter Hurdles finishing in 63.14… Dora Filipovic of Grand Canyon won the 400-meter and posted the second fastest time in the conference… NM State's La Shira Tremble ran the second fastest 100-meter time and third fastest 200-meter time in the WAC… Jennifer Zapata of UT Rio Grande Valley notched a new program record in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase crossing at 10:49.23… Utah Valley's Aisha Graham-Perez won the 800-meter in 2:14.63.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Traci Mills earned the second-best Long Jump mark in the WAC while also posting the fourth-best 100-meter dash time… Hannah Smith of NM State took first place in the Triple Jump and posted the top mark in the conference for the Long Jump at 5.59 meters… UT Rio Grande Valley's Diamond Thomas took sixth in the discus tossing it 50.38 meters.
THIS WEEK IN WAC OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
The Lancers split for competition this week participating in the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco State's Mike Fanelli Track Classic. For the women, Anett Somogyi ran the 10,000-meter in 34:06.91 to set a new school record. She finished 12th. Also finishing 12th, Emilie Renaud completed the 3,000-meter Steeplechase in 10:24.16. Dennis Messmer ran the 5K in 14:44.34 to set a new personal best and placed 72nd out of 226 runners.
CSU BAKERSFIELD
CSU Bakersfield earned one first-place finish and four runner-ups at the Cal State Fullerton Team Challenge. Corbin Chronister finished first in the Discus and second in Shot Put. Tim Van Horn was the other 'Runner to place in Field events earning second in the High Jump. Gabe Gaeta and Riley Slayton both took second in the 400-meter Hurdles.
GRAND CANYON
Moataz Hassan led the Lopes at the Cal State Fullerton Team Challenge breaking the program record for Shot Put. He finished third with a toss of 16.18 meters. The Lopes have broken or tied a school record for 19 meets in a row. Madelyn Lundberg is best in the WAC after jumping 4.03 meters in the Pole Vault and won the event. Courtney Logan placed third and moved to second-best in school history with a 53.33 meter throw in the Hammer.
KANSAS CITY
The Kansas City Track and Field teams split their competition amongst three meets, the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, and the San Francisco State Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Quinlan Moll placed 16th of 108 runners in the 10,000-meter run posting the second fastest time in school history (29:37.54). Lukas Van der Watt earned second in the Pole Vault reaching 5.00 meters. Traci Mills took eighth jumping 5.73 meters in the Long Jump.
NM STATE
Hannah Smith took home the Aggies' solo gold medal from the Texas State Bobcat Invitational. Smith jumped 12.59-meters to win the Triple Jump. Kayli Farmer earned the other top-ten finish. She placed seventh in the Javelin with a 40.76 meter mark.
SEATTLE U
Seattle U garnered 24 personal records in their outing at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Elle Stein shaved almost three and a half minutes off her previous best in the 10K crossing at 37:29.61. Caylah Lunning finished fifth in the Long Jump posting a mark of 5.37 meters. Steve Brown took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles crossing in 56.75 seconds, a personal-
best.
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UTRGV's women's distance relay broke the program record at the Clyde Little Field Texas Relays. Sierra Spinler, Ashley Hughes, Kyra Keurentjes, and Dorcas Koech recorded a time of 12:16.91. Four other relay teams also recorded performances that rank top-five in program history. In individual events, Jennifer Zapata took eighth in a time of 10:49.23 in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Omer Almog and Samariae Bonds both finished 11th in the 1,500-meter run and Shot Put, respectively.
UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverine men won eight events while the women claimed five. Daven Russell won the Shot Put and took third in the Hammer. Albert MacArthur won the Long and Triple Jump events. Jordan Carder won the 200-meter dash and Jordan Peterson took gold in the 100-meter. Adrian Jones won the 3,000-meter Steeplechase clocking in at 9:25.59. Andre Jones found his way into the first-place mix winning the 400-meter dash. For the women, Maddie Riggs claimed the first gold in the1,500-meter race. Aisha Graham-Perez won the 800-meter and Courtney Peterson took gold in the 400-meter. Hannah Branch, Paityn Chynoweth, and Maggie Zwahlen swept the 3,000-meter.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2019 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship will take place in Orem, Utah May 9-11. Utah Valley is set to host at the Hal Wing Track & Field.
