WAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week
DENVER – Grand Canyon's Niki Xydona and UT Rio Grande Valley's Diamond Thomas have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for April 2-8.
Xydona, a junior from Thiva, Greece, broke the program record for the Heptathlon by 313 points. She tallied 4,985 points to finish 11th. She posted personal-bests in the 100 Hurdles, 200-meter dash and 800-meter while her best finish came in the Javelin Throw at third. Xydona ranks best in the WAC and 31st in the country.
Thomas, a senior from Houston, Texas, recorded the second-best Shot Put mark and third-best Discus throw in program history. She took first in all three throwing events at the South Texas Showdown. Thomas reached 14.92. meters in the Shot Put, 50.60 meters in the Discus, and 50.61 meters in the Hammer. She currently leads the WAC in the Shot Put and Discus and is third in the Hammer.
Other track nominees: Kansas City's Carolyn Ross set a new school record in the 400-meter Hurdles and posted the top time in the WAC this season at 1:00.17… Ashley Hughes of UT Rio Grande Valley broke the program record in the 400-meter for the second time this season with a time of 54.35.
Other field nominees: Kansas City's Traci Mills jumped 11.88 meters in the Triple Jump, good for third-best in the conference.
