PHOENIX – The Western Athletic Conference today announced its 2019 All-WAC teams and major awards as selected by the league's head coaches. NM State swept the major awards as Nikki Butler was named WAC Player of the Year, Samaria Diaz was named WAC Pitcher of the Year, Mya Fender was named WAC Freshman of the Year and the Aggies' Kathy Rodolph was named WAC Coach of the Year.
Butler, a junior catcher from La Habra, Calif., earns WAC Player of the Year honors after leading the league in WAC games in home runs (4), ranking fifth in hits (22) and on base percentage (.453), sixth in total bases (36), seventh in slugging percentage (.632) and eighth in batting average (.386). She posted six multi-hit games during WAC play.
Diaz, a junior right-hander from West Covina, Calif., earns WAC Pitcher of the Year honors after leading the WAC in strikeouts (100), wins (7), saves (3) and ranking second in both opponent batting average (.188) and innings pitched (70.1), and third in ERA (1.39). She went 7-1 with three saves in 16 appearances, posting a 4.00 strikeout-walk ratio over 70.1 innings pitched.
Felder, a third baseman from Fresno, Calif., earns WAC Freshman of the Year honors after batting .388 with five multi-hit games, six doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs over 18 WAC games. She ranked second in the WAC in league play in slugging percentage (.755) and doubles, third in on base percentage (.492), fifth in total bases (37), sixth in RBIs and seventh in batting average and runs (11).
Rodolph earns Coach of the Year honors after NM State finished tied for second in the WAC standings with a 12-6 record. The Aggies won five of six of their WAC series, and closed out the season on a seven-game WAC winning streak. In conference games, her team led the WAC in batting average (.321), slugging percentage (.510), on-base percentage (.396), hits (159), doubles (29), home runs (21), batters struck out (131), saves (4) and fielding percentage (.982). This is the fourth time she has won the award.
