GRAND CANYON
This week in Men's Tennis the Lopes had back to back matches in Utah.
The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost the season opener to Utah State on saturday, 4-3. Doubles team Maxim Kirsh and Julian Mueller and David Weber and Laurent Magne lost in the doubles rounds but Can Franke and Lorenzo Fucile were victorious. Later in singles play, Fucile and Mueller both pocketed wins at 6-4 to tie the match at 2-2.
On sunday, Lorenzo Fucile went 4-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend while freshman teammate David Weber also was perfect in singles play. Weber State took an early 1-0 lead after doubles play, winning at Nos. 2 and 3. The Lopes (0-2) were able to get a win at No. 1 with Fucile and freshman Can Franke picking up their second victory of the weekend. In singles play Weber was able to slow the Wildcats down, but it was not enough in the Lopes loss, 2-5.
Seattle U
Seattle U competed in a dual match against Washington. Colton Weeldreyer had the most balanced singles match for Seattle U, finishing with a score of 3-6, 3-6. Lars Schmassmann started out strong in his match, but ended up losing 4-6. There were a few close matches, but the Redhawks were ultimately swept by the Huskies in both matches, posting identical scores of 0-7.
GRAND CANYON REPRESENTS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
Grand Canyon's singles player Lorenzo Fucile and doubles team Lorenzo Fucile and Can Franke have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for Jan. 6 - 12.
Fucile, a senior from Messina, Italy, went undefeated in singles, earned two wins while in Utah. On day one at Utah State, he collected a win over Utah State's Sergiu Bucur (6-3, 6-1). Day two Fucile and the Lopes were in Ogden, Utah when Fucile won his second win of the weekend against Kris Van Wyk (6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7)).
Fucile and teammate Franke, a freshman from Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Germany, collected wins on both of thier doubles matches. These two are new doubles partners and the senior-freshman duo have shown that they work well beside each other. The duo earned their first win over Utah State's Sergiu Bucur and Roko Savin defeating them 6-4. The second win was gained from defeating Weber State's Serafim Arthur and Cezary Walkusz 6-2.
Other male singles nominee: Seattle U's freshman Lars Schmassmann strong in his match, but ended up losing 4-6, 1-6
Other male doubles nominees: Seattle U's Colton Weeldreyer and Emilio Monroy played hard together but fell 3-6
