SU'S BROWN NAMED TICKETSMARTER WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Seattle U's Terrell Brown has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 20 through Jan. 26. This marks the second honor for Brown this season.
Brown, a junior guard from Seattle, led the Redhawks on the road in games at Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield. Against GCU, the junior scored 31 points to go with four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block in a tight 80-77 loss. He helped SU bounce back on Saturday, putting up 21 points with three rebounds, three assists and a steal in an 86-79 win over the 'Runners. On the year, Brown leads the WAC in scoring at 19.9 points per game and the 6-1 guard is also fourth in rebounding at 6.3 boards per game, second in assists at 4.9 per game and fifth in steals at 1.5 per game.
Other nominees included: CSU Bakersfield's Taze Moore led the 'Runners with 19.0 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game in a home split that included an overtime win over Utah Valley before a home loss to Seattle U … Grand Canyon's Alessandro Lever collected his sixth 20-point game of the season and set a career-high with 14 rebounds in a 73-69 loss to Utah Valley … Kansas City's Franck Kamgain scored a season-high 16 points in his first start as a Roos to lead KC to a 67-57 win on the road at California Baptist … NM State's Ivan Aerrecoechea put up 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting in a 67-62 win at UT Rio Grande Valley … UT Rio Grande Valley's Jordan Jackson scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting to help the Vaqueros stay close in a loss to NM State … Utah Valley's TJ Washington led the Wolverines to a road split, including 24 points in a 73-69 win at Grand Canyon.
UP NEXT
Following a non-conference matchup between Kansas City and Crowley's Ridge on Monday, the WAC schedule resumes on Wednesday with California Baptist heading to Orem to take on Utah Valley. On Thursday, Grand Canyon visits UT Rio Grande Valley and CSU Bakersfield makes the trip to NM State. KC will hit the road on Saturday, heading up to the Windy City to take on Chicago State in a noon matinee. CBU plays at Seattle U in the afternoon as well while CSU Bakersfield takes on UTRGV and GCU heads to NM State on Saturday night.
WAC STAT LEADERS
California Baptist leads the WAC in scoring (80.2), scoring margin (+10.7), free throw percentage (.776), field goal defense (.411), three-point field goal percentage (.366), rebounding offense (41.0), assists (15.1), defensive rebounds (29.9) and three-pointers made (9.6). League-leader NM State is also on top in scoring defense (60.8), field goal percentage (.457) and rebounding defense (28.1). Seattle U holds the top mark in three-point defense (.302) while CSU Bakersfield is the leader in rebounding margin (+8.7) and offensive rebounds (14.0). Utah Valley is the shot blocking leader (5.5) and UT Rio Grande Valley is best in steals (8.7), turnover margin (+5.11) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1).
Individually, Seattle U's Terrell Brown is the scoring leader at 19.9 points per game. CBU's De'jon Davis holds the top spot in rebounding with 8.6 per game and his 2.4 offensive rebounds per game and 6.2 defensive rebounds per game are also WAC bests. NM State's Ivan Aurrecoechea leads the league in field goal percentage (.599). SU's Morgan Means has the top free throw percentage (.891) and UTRGV's Connor Raines has the top three-point shooting percentage (.472). CBU's Milan Acquaah holds the top mark in assists (6.0) while NM State's Trevelin Queen has the top mark in steals (1.9). CBU's Ferron Flavors Jr. leads the league with 3.0 three-pointers per game and UVU's Emmanuel Olojakpoke is the blocked shots leader at 2.9 per contest. CSUB's Czar Perry boasts the top assist/turnover ratio at 2.8.
In WAC-only play, Seattle U is the scoring leader at 82.3 points per game and the Redhawks also hold the top spot in field goal defense (.400), three-point defense (.301) and turnover margin (+5.57). NM State is the leader in scoring defense (63.5), scoring margin (+14.09), field goal percentage (.498), three-point shooting percentage (.405), rebounding defense (26.2), rebounding margin (+7.8), assists (17.7), assist/turnover ratio (1.3) and three-pointers made (10.3). California Baptist is the top free throw shooting team (.799) and CSU Bakersfield leads the league in rebounding offense (39.0) and offensive rebounds (14.5). Utah Valley's 5.1 blocks per game are a WAC best as are UTRGV's 7.8 steals per game. Grand Canyon is the leader in defensive rebounds at 28.7 per game.
Individually, SU's Brown is the scoring leader with 18.7 ppg. UVU's Isaiah White has the rebounding lead in league play with 9.1 per game. CBU's Zach Pirog has the top field goal percentage (.826), teammate Acquaah has the top free throw percentage (.935) and fellow Lancer Bul Kuol is the leader in three-point percentage (.538). UTRGV's Javon Levi holds the top spot in assists (8.6) and assist/turnover ratio (3.9) with SU's Brown also leading the league in steals (2.1). KC's Rob Whitfield is averaging a league-high 2.6 three-pointers per game and UVU's Olojakpoke is swatting a WAC-best 3.0 blocks per game.
GOING STREAKING
NM State earned a win at UT Rio Grande Valley to push their record-settiong WAC win streak to 21 straight games. The Aggies used a win over Seattle U on Jan. 18 to move past Utah, who won 19 straight from 1998-99.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR
Former NM State Aggie and current Toronto Raptor Pascal Siakam was named a starter for the Eastern Conference at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 16 in Chicago. The 2014-15 WAC Freshman of the Year and 2015-16 WAC Player of the Year is averaging 23.5 points per game for the defending NBA Champions. He was selected by the Raptors with the 27th pick of the 2016 NBA Draft.
FREE, FREE, FREE!
Seattle U and Kansas City gave fans a little extra excitement on WAC opening night, playing three overtimes before the host Roos were able to break away and earn the 90-86 victory. It was the first triple-overtime game in the WAC since CBU lost at UAPB on Nov. 23, 2018 and the first multiple-overtime game in WAC play since Grand Canyon defeated Chicago State in double overtime on Jan. 28, 2017.
SOUTHWEST MEETS SOUTHEAST
NM State picked up its first win over an SEC program since Dec. 29, 1994 when it beat Mississippi State on Dec. 22. It was also the first victory for a WAC squad over a Power Six team this season.
NEARLY PERFECT
Kansas City's Jordan Giles shot 10-of-11 from the field en route to a career-high 25 points in Kansas City's first road win of the year at South Dakota on Dec. 22 to help the Roos shoot over 63 percent as a team, which is the highest since November of 2011.
UTRGV'S LEVI CLIMBING PROGRAM STEALS LIST
UT Rio Grande Valley junior Javon Levi currently ranks fourth in program history in career steals with 174. He is two shy of third place and nine away from second.
