WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MEN

Utah Valley's Adrian Jones and Larry Still has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week for Jan. 20-26.

Jones, a senior from Meridian, Idaho, earned gold in both of the events he competed in. Jones' first event was the mile run where he clocked in at 4:14.91, marking up to be number one in the WAC this season. Jones ran in the 3000m run cross the line first at 8:28.12.

Still, the senior from Richland, Wash., competed in the Pole Vault this week. Still marked a new UVU program record by nearly a foot on Saturday by clearing 5.30m (17-04.50) at Boise State's Ed Jacoby Invitational. The height was not only good enough to win the event, but also lead the WAC this season as well as mark the 16th best in Division I NCAA.

Other track nominee: GCU's Trey Johnson finished first in the 60-meter dash (7.87)... Seattle U's Zach Gonzalez earned gold in the 400m (50.35) ... UTRGV's Ricardo Mendoza finished third in the 800m (1:55.70) this week and competed in the 3000m (8:48.37).

Other field nominee: UTRGV's Paul May got better in Shot Put (17.68m) by 1.43meter.  He also has a personal-best in Weight Throw (18.46m)... GCU's Aleksandris Eglitis came seventh in the Pole Vault (5.05m) this week.

NM State's Lashira Tremble and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's Samariae Bonds has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week for January 20 - 26.

 

WOMEN

Tremble, the senior from Peoria, Ariz., raised the bar on a couple of personal records this week. Tremble competed in the 60m dash, where she clocked in at 7.44 seconds. The time is a career-best, but is now holding the number one spot in the WAC this season and 57th in the Division I NCAA. Tremble ran 24.80 seconds in the 200m race, which is not only a personal best but is now locked in at the second position in the WAC.

Bonds, a sophomore from Pflugerville, TX., is now holding the number one positions in two events for the WAC. Bonds excelled this week in the Shot Put, her mark of 15.98m earned her gold at the Aggie Invitational. Her mark surpassed her old record by 0.67 meters, is now first for the WAC and 20th in the NCAA. Bonds later competed in the Weight Throw event where she earned silver with a mark of 18.95m. Bonds' mark in Weight Throw is number one for the WAC this season and 56th in the NCAA.

Other track nominee: GCU's Alexa Hokanson ran a personal-best in the 600m with a time of 1:34.53 ... Seattle U's Courtney Gelmin is now ninth in the WAC in the 3000m run with a time of 10:15.51... UTRGV's Kyra Keurentjes ran in the 800m (2:14.52) and in the 4x400m (3:55.31). UVU's Taylor Viertel competed in the mile (5:01.03) and 3000m (10:25.22). Kansas City's Sommer Herner ran a personal-best 800m (2:15.99).

Other field nominee: GCU's Alyson Schwartz finished third in the pole vault (4.05m)... NM State's Bristol O'Conner finished sixth in the Weight Throw (16.83m) and 12th in the Shot Put (12.27m).
