TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – New Mexico State's Nicolas Buitrago and Seattle U's Hannah Gianan and Seattle U's doubles team Alex Chan and Trenton Neild and UT Rio Grande Valley's doubles team Kristyna Mamicova and Alicia Thal have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for Jan. 20-26.
Buitrago, a senior from Bogotá, Colombia, sealed the team win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over his Western New Mexico opponent. NM State defeated Western New Mexico 7-0. Buitrago earned the win from the No. 2 slot.
Gianan, a junior from Camas, Wash., finished the weekend 1-1. She first lost to Boise State in the No. 2 slot, 5-7, 6-3, 0-1. She earned her win over Idaho State at No. 1, 6-0, 6-4.
Chan, a senior from Federal Way, Wash., and Nield, a senior from La Selva Beach, Calif., went 1-1 against Boise State and Idaho State. The pair lost to their Boise State opponents who were ranked #50 in the nation 2-6. The duo collected a victory against Idaho State 6-3 at the No. 1 slot.
Mamicova, a freshman from Prague, Czech Republic, and Thal a junor from Mucich, Germany went 1-1 in the No. 3 slot this week. The duo lost against a Sam Houston State duo 3-6. The duo's next match against Stephen F. Austin went 6-2.
Other male singles nominee: GCU's David Weber went 1-1 this week.
Other female singles nominees: UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga went 1-1 this week... Kansas City's Yana Grechkina went 4-6, 6-3, 2-1 unfinished against FIU... GCU's Natasha Puehse went 1-0 at the No. 3 spot.
Other male doubles nominees: NM State's Louis Menard and Jordy Visser won 6-3 at No. 1 against a Western New Mexico duo... GCU's Valentin Lang and Freddie Grant went 6-1 at No. 1.
Other female doubles nominees: Seattle U's Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman went 1-1 this week at the No. 3 slot... GCU's Autum Prudhomme and Ludovica Infantino went 6-4 in a win against a BYU duo.
