THIS WEEK IN WAC SWIMMING AND DIVING

California Baptist

The Lancer's competed hard against GCU on Saturday, but fell short. Sean Foster swept both the individual breaststroke events (100 Breast; 56.82 , 200 Breast; 2:06.22). Tyler Stevens scored a new career-best on the 1-meter dive (285.45).

The women's Lancer team also took on GCU to get five wins.

Grand Canyon

GCU's mens ended their last home meet of the season with a win of CBU. The Lopes swept the 1650 Free with Mikhail Lyubavskiy (15:26.80) in first, Alonso Carazo Barbero (15:40.73) in second, and Wiktor Jaszczak (15:50.09) finishing third. The men sweep again in the 200 Free, Samuel McKenzie took the gold (1:40.31), Dylan Nasser second (1:43.22) and Briggs Shiller recieved bronze (1:43.36). Pietro Hufnagel Toscani won both dives with a score of 367.20 in the 1-meter and 364.05 in the 3-meter dive.

The Lady 'Lopes started the day of with a win in the 200 Medley Relay (45.02) with Briana Rittenbach, Marina McInelly, Cecelia Mayer and Emily Muteti. Kelsey Andrusak won the 200 Free, finishing in 1:56.76. The ladies swept the 100 Back with Kyra Forrest with gold (58.23), Rittenbach finished second (58.76), and Robyn Edwards placed third (58.90). The 1-meter dive was swept by the Lopes as well.

NM State

NM State came up short on Saturday afternoon agaisnt New Mexico. NMSU first win of the day was the 200 Free by Neza Kocijan with a time of 1:54.98.

Northern Arizona

The Lady Jacks took back to back losses in their matches against Boise State over the weekend. On the first day, Sarah O'Connor, Hope Williams, Maddie Seidl and Elisa Rodriguez swam touched the wall second in 400 Medley to get a time of 3:44.48, which was 0.31 seconds. In the 100 IM, Niamh McDonagh, Haley Mayhew, and Katy Smith swept the podium. McDonagh now holds the new record for NAU in the 100 IM. Williams broke a program record in the 50 Breast with the time of 28.95.

Seattle U

In the Redhawk Center, Seattle U's men's wim team won their last regular season match against Simon Fraser, 165-90. The Redhawks won 10 of the 14 events. Juan Varela (1650 Free, 16:11.54), Connor Barringer (200 Free, 1:42.67)and Ryan Shaw (100 Back, 51.22) each tallied first-place finishes. The Redhawks swept the 50 Free with Greg Raper (20.69), Isaac Parker (21.24) and Tyler Goodspeed (21.81).

 

MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 20- JAN. 26

California Baptist's Sean Foster and Grand Canyon's Piertro Hufnagel Toscani has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan 20- 26.

Foster, the junior from Clinton Township, N.J., earned first-place finishes in two individual events. Foster's first event was the 100 Breast with a time of 55.82. He later touches the wall first in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:06.22. Foster also swam in two second-place relay teams, the 200 Free (1:23.00) and the 200 Medley (1:31.63).

Toscani, the senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored a 367.20 in the 1-meter board, placing first. He scored a 364.05 in the 3-meter board which allowed him to capture first.

WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 20 - JAN. 26

Grand Canyon's Marina McInelly and Sara Lameiro Castellanos has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 20 - Jan. 26.

McInelly, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., swam hard this week against CBU. McInelly touched the wall first in the 100 Breast at 1:03.00, now holding the fourth spot in the WAC. She later came in first in the 200 Breast at a 2:18.50. McInelly also swam in the 200 IM, where she came in third with a time of 2:09.18.

Castellanos, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, competed in the 1-meter dive this weekend and received a score of 290.05 earning first place. She also beat her WAC opponents in the 3-meter dive as well with a score of 325.10.

OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES

Other men's swimmer nominee: GCU's Mikhail Lyubavskiy earned first-place in the 1650 Free (15:26.80) and 500 Free (4:34.95) and second-place in the 200 IM (1:55.23)... Seattle U's Greg Raper earned two first-place wins (50 Free; 20.69, 100 Fly; 49.08).

Other men's diver nominee: CBU's Evan Honer competed in the 1-meter (345.15) and 3-meter (326.00) dive.

Other women's swimmer nominees: CBU's Isabella Rhodes had a first-place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.64), second-place in the 100 Free (52.89) and fourth in the 100 Back (59.30)... Northern Arizona's Elisa Rodriguez had a season-best first-place win in the 50 Free (23.25) and first in the 100 Free (51.39).

Other women's diver nominees: CBU's Savannah Uhlir finished second on the 3-meter(261.40) and fourth on the 1-meter (246.85)... Northern Arizona's Jenny Cheetham came in first-place in both events (1m;283.2, 3m; 290.85)
