This Week in WAC Women's Tennis - Feb. 12

KANSAS CITY AND SEATTLE U REPRESENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Kansas City's Yana Grechkina and Seattle U's women's doubles team Jade Lancaster and Hannah Gianan have been named the Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 3-9.

Grechkina, a senior from Vladmir, Russia, helped Kansas City get the win against Bradkey. At No. 2 Grechkina went to three sets (1-6, 6-4, 6-2). This was her first match back from a back injury and is her first win of the season.

Lancaster, a freshman from Lake Tapps, Wash., and Gianan, a junior from Camas, Wash., went 1-1 at No. 1 this week. The duo fell to a Wyoming duo, 2-6. The duo later defeated a Montana State duo 7-6.

Other female singles nominees: Chicago State's Diana Borodina went 1-0 at No. 2 and 0-1 at No.3... GCU's Martina Lo Pumo went 1-0 at the No. 6 spot... Seattle U's Jade Lancaster, No. 4, won against Montana State (6-3,6-3). 

Other female doubles nominees: GCU's Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss at No. 2 went 1-0... Kansas City's Riddhi Sharma and Thanushree Vale went 1-0 this week at the No. 2 slot.

 

THIS WEEK IN WAC WOMEN'S TENNIS

GRAND CANYON

The 'Lopes clinched the singles to win 4-1. The team lost the doubles point to UC Irvine but went into singles with something to prove. First to finish was Martina Lo Pumo (6-4,6-4) at No. 6. At No. 2, Natasha Puehse had her set go to three (2-6,6-2,6-1). Third to finish was Emilia Occhipinti (7-6, 6-3) at No. 1. Ludovica Infantino (6-1, 3-6, 6-4) at No. 5 clinched to match.

 

KANSAS CITY

The 'Roos won against Bradley , 5-2 this saturday. In doubles play, duos Riddhi Sharma and Thanushree Vale,  at No. 2, and Grace Ball and Rhiannon McBlane, at No. 3, both won 6-2. In singles play, the ladies got some push back from Bradley. At No. 4, Vale dominated 6-1,6-4. Ball, at No. 5 won 6-1,6-2. Back from injury, Yana Grechkina, at No. 2 took her set to three to win (1-6, 6-4, 6-2).  Sharma, at No. 3, also won in three sets (2-6,6-2,6-4).

 

SEATTLE U

Against Wyoming, the Redhawks were clinched. In doubles play, Seattle U lost the doubles point. In singles, the Redhawks were swept 3-0.

The Redhawks then went up against a determined Montana State, losing 6-1.   The Redhawks lost the doubles point but duo Hannah Gianan and Jade Lancaster did not let it go uncontested, winning their set 7-6 (12-10). In Singles play, Lancaster won her set (6-3, 6-3).

 

UTRGV

The UTRGV lost to the Islanders, 7-0. In singles play, Katarina Sasaroga took her set to three (6-2, 5-7, 10-4) but could not secure the win.
