SEATTLE U AND UTRGV STAND OUTS
Seattle U's Jade Lancaster and UTRGV's women's doubles team Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasarago have been named the Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 10-16.
Lancaster, a freshman from Lake Tapps, Wash, went 2-0 at No. 4 this week. Friday's match Lancaster helped sweep British Columbia with her win, 6-4, 6-2. Her win against her Whitman opponent went 6-1,6-0.
Putz, a sophomore from Munich, Germany, and Sasarago, a sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, won their match, 6-2, at No. 1 against an Incarnate Word duo. The duo also went up against a UTSA duo, but their match was unfinished at 4-5.
Other female singles nominees: Kansas City's Riddhi Sharma went 1-0 at the No. 3 spot... UTRGV's Valeria Montero went 1-1 at No. 4.
Other female doubles nominees: Kansas City's Riddhi Sharma and Thanushree Vale won their match No. 2, (6-1) ...Seattle U's Kyra Jung and Michelle Bader went 2-0 and No. 2.
THIS WEEK IN WAC TENNIS
GRAND CANYON
The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost to San Jose on Saturday, 5-2. In doubles play, at No. 3 Ludovica Infantino and Autum Prudhomme lost their set (6-3). At No. 2 Celia Morel and Jana Weiss bested their opponent, 6-2. At No.1 duo Emilia Occhipinti and Celina Buhr lost their set (6-3), resulting in San Jose winning the doubles point. In singles play, Buhr at No. 3 had a three-set victory (6-3,2-6,6-4) as well as Occhipinti (3-6, 6-2, 6-1).
The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost to Colorado State on Sunday, 5-4. In singles play Colorado State took flights 3, 4, and 6 while Occhipinti took No. 1 (6-0, 7-6, 6-3), Natahsa Puehse took No. 2 (6-4, 6-2) and Infantino took No. 5 (6-2, 6-4). The Colorado State took the match when they took the doubles point.
KANSAS CITY
The Kansas City women's tennis team fell to Omaha on Saturday, 6-1. Riddhi Sharma earned the Roos only point at No. 3 (6-2, 3-6, 7-5).
NM STATE
The NM State women's team fell to UNLV, 6-1. In doubles play, NMSU took the point. At No. 1, Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga lost their set, 6-2. At No. 2 Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen defeated their opponents, 6-4 and duo Lucija Josipovic and Neus Torregrosa won their set, 7-6 (7-3), at No.3. UNLV swept singles play.
The Aggies lost to Arizona, 6-1 and fell to Santa Clara, 7-0.
SEATTLE U
The Seattle U women's team did a complete swept of British Columbia, 7-0. The Redhawks won all of the singles matches and all three of the doubles matches.
The Seattle U women's team defeated Whitman College, 6-1. The Redhawks go to sweep Whitman in doubles play.
UTRGV
The UTRGV women's team fell to UTSA, 7-0 on Saturday.
The Vaqueros went up against Incarnate Word on Sunday, to fall 4-3. The Vaqueros won the double point with duos Katarina Sasaroga and Sandra Putz at No. 1 defeated their opponents 6-2 and Valeria Montero and Kristyna Mamicova at No. 3 with a victory of 6-2. In singles play, the Vaqueros only could pull a couple of points. Alicia Thal at No. 3 won her match after her opponent retired in the second set. Montero at No. 5 collected a point with her win (5-7, 7-5, 10-8).
