ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
NMSU's Jordy Visser and Kansas City's men's doubles team Tom Kruse and Diego Giraldo have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 10-16.
Visser, a junior from Bemmel, Netherlands, went 2-0 at the No. 2 slot this week against Abilene Christian and UT Permian Basin. Visser won his first match by taking his ABU opponent to three sets (5-7, 6-4, 6-3). Later in the day, Visser defeated his UT Permian Basin opponent, 6-3,6-4.
Kruse, a senior from Flensberg, Germany, and Giraldo, a senior from Medellin, Colombia, went 1-0 at the No. 1 this week. The duo grabbed their first victory against Creighton, 6-4. The duo is now 1-1.
Other male singles nominees: UTRGV's Carlo Izurieta got his first win of the season winning at the No. 1 (7-6 (2) 7-5).
Other male doubles nominee: NMSU's Jordy Visser and Nivolas Buitrago went 1-1 this week at No.1 ...UTRGV's Alberto Mello and Izuruieta won at No. 1 (6-3) against Laredo CC.
THIS WEEK IN WAC TENNIS
CHICAGO STATE
The Chicago State men's tennis team went up against Northern Kentucky on Saturday and lost, 6-1. The cougars got their lone point from No. 2 singles Jesus Plaza Perez winning his match 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
The Cougars were swept by Illinois, 4-0.
The Cougars got their first win of the season, 6-1, over Prairie State College on Sunday. In doubles play, the Cougars won at No. 2 (Jakub Zamorski/Javier Sanchez Pradillo, 6-1) and No. 3 (Cody Wurzelbacher/Pedja Kolaric, 6-1). In singles play, the Cougars went on to nearly sweep Prairie State College.
KANSAS CITY
The Roos battled Creighton, to fall 7-0. The Roos' duo Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse won at the No. 1 doubles, 6-4, to stop the sweep.
NM STATE
The Aggies lost a close one to Abilene Christian, 4-3. Abilene Christian secured the doubles point. In singles play, the Aggies could only lock in three wins.
The Aggies won against UT Permian Basin, 4-0. Duos Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser (6-1) and Timothee Curnier and Luis Flores (6-2) earned the doubles point.
SEATTLE U
On Saturday the Redhawks were defeated by Weber State, 7-0.
On Sunday the Redhawks were swept by UNLV. Despite the sweep, Trenton Nield was able to take his match to three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0(10-6).
