This Week In WAC Men's Tennis - Feb. 26

WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

UTRGV's Samuel de Felipe Garcia and NMSU's men's doubles team Luis Flores and Martin Simecek have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 17-23.

De Felipe Garcia, a sophomore from Oviendo, Spain, is on a three-match win streak at No. 2 after this week. On Friday, he faced a DePaul opponent where he won his match to two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Later that day against his Eastern Washington opponent he won in two sets (6-0,6-1) as well. His match on saturday went unfinished with him and his opponent each earning a set.

Flores, a senior from Toluco, Mexico, and Simecek, a sophomore from Prerov, Czech Republic, during the H-E-B Tournament went 3-0 this week at No. 2 to remain undefeated this 2020 season, moving to 4-0. On Friday against both Troy and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, the duo won their matches 6-4. On Saturday the duo took on a Eastern Washington duo and won 6-3.

Other male singles nominees: GCU's Freddie Grant went 1-1 this week... Kansas City's Tom Kruse won his match in three sets at No. 2... NMSU's Nicolas Buitrago went 2-0 this week.

Other male doubles nominee: GCU's Justin Cvitanovic and Valentin Lang won their match against their Omaha opponents this week at No. 2 ...UTRGV's Samuel De Felipe Garcia and Michael Loyd went 2-0 this week.

 

THIS WEEK IN WAC MEN'S TENNIS

CHICAGO STATE

The Cougars dropped 7-0 against Western Michigan.

The Chicago State men dropped, 7-0. Jesus Perez Plaza shined by taking his set to three (4-6, 6-3, 10-6).

 

GRAND CANYON

The Grand Canyon took on Baylor on Saturday to be swept, 7-0.

On Sunday, they gained their first win of the season, 6-1, against Omaha.  GCU started off the match with winning doubles No. 1 and No. 2 to gain the point. In singles, the Lopes only dropped one on court, at No. 6.

KANSAS CITY

The Roos secure their first win of the season against Oral Roberts, 4-2. Tom Kruse won his match (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No. 2, Neil O'Conner defeated his opponent (6-4, 6-2) at No. 4, Jake Fraudfelder won (6-2,3-6,6-1) at No. 5 and Kacper Piekarek won (7-6 (7-5), 6-1) at No. 6.

NM STATE

The Aggies competed in the H-E-B Tournament in Corpus Christi, Tx this week and went 2-1. The first match of the tournament, NM State faced Troy, to win 4-3. In this battle, NM State took the doubles point with Martin Simicek and Luis Flores at line No. 2 (6-4) and Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser and line No. 3 (6-4). In singles play, Troy went and took singles No. 2, 6 and 3 consecutively. At No. 4 Timothee Curnier won his set (6-4, 7-5). Buitrago won at No. 1 and Flores won at No. 5.

The Aggie go on to drop to Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, 4-0. After a night's rest defeated Eastern Washington, 4-1.

SEATTLE U

The Seattle U's men were clinched by Gonzaga on Saturday, 4-0.

UTRGV

The UTRGV men's team competed in the H-E-B tournament in Corpus Christi, Tx this week and went 1-2. The first match of the tournament the team faced Depaul, to drop 4-3. The team took the doubles point with duos Zane Kohrs and George Hutchings at No. 2 and Michael Loyd and Samuel de Felipe Garcia at No. 3. The team was only able to pull two of the of the singles to result in their loss.

The second match of the tournament, the Vaqueros won against Eastern Washington, 4-1. The team took the doubles point again this match with Korhs and Hutchings at No. 2 and Loyd and de Felipe Garcia at No. 3. During singles play, de Felipe Garcia and Korhs has wins at No.2 and No. 4, respectively. The third point came from Te Kani Williams' win at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2).

The last match of the tournament, the Vaqueros faced Trop, to be swept 4-0.
