WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
UTRGV's Max Carmona and GCU's Grant Carpenter has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week for January 27- February 2.
Carmona, a sophomore from Brownsville, TX., earned gold with his relay teammates in the Distance Medley Race to set a new UTRGV program record and move to the number one spot in the WAC by almost 6 seconds. Carmona ran in the 800m event to earn bronze with a time of 1:53.69.
Carpenter, a senior from Surprise, Ariz., competed at the Houston Invitational this week. At the meet, Carpenter competed in the Heptathlon received a score of 5052 to earn place fifth. During the Heptathlon, Carpenter was able to jump a 6.60m in the Long Jump event. He placed second in the Shot Put event with a length of 12.70m.
Other track nominees: GCU's Jacob Lewis finished fourth in the Mile run (4:11.35) and sixth in the 3000m (8:32.22)... Seattle U's Nathan Pixler placed 16th in the 800m (1:53.94).
Other field nominee: UTRGV's Baffour Kyem competed in the Long Jump (6.60m) and now has the third-best Triple Jump (14.52m) in UTRGV's history.
WOMEN
Grand Canyon's Paige Hildebrandt and Niki Xydona has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week for January 27 - February 2.
Hildebrandt, the senior from Peoria, Ariz., marked up the WAC leader boards this week while earning gold in one of the events competed. Hildebrandt finished fourth in the Mile run to clock a time of 4:57.07 in the Houston Invitational. Her mile time is now number one in the WAC this season. Hildebrandt earned gold in the 3000m run with a time of 9:50.61. The time is now number one for the WAC this season as well.
Xydona, the senior from Thiva, Greece, earned bronze this week at the Houston Invitational in the Pentathlon event. Xydona earned a score of 3608. Her score is now number one in the WAC by 253 points. Xydona was able to get third in the Long Jump Event with a length of 5.63m.
Other track nominees: Seattle U's Regie Grady set a personal best in the 200m (25.98) and the 400m (57.81)... UTRGV's Mystique Brown ran in the 60m (7.84) and in the 200m (24.85).
Other field nominee: UTRGV's Samariae Bonds finished fourth in the Weight Throw (18.33m) and first in the Shot Put (16.59m).
