TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week

New Mexico State's Harsha Challa and Grand Canyon's women's doubles team Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss have been named the Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for January 27- February 4.

 

Challa, a junior from Hyderabad, India, won her only singles match this week. Challa, at the No. 1 position, was able to defeat her New Mexico opponent in three sets (2-6, 7-6, 6-3).

 

Puehse, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Weiss a sophomore from Klagenfurt, Austria went 2-0 in the No. 2 slot this week. The duo defeated a Montana duo 6-2. The duo's next match against Montana St. went 6-1.

 

Other female singles nominees: GCU's Puehse went 2-0 at the No. 2 spot... Seattle U's Jade Lancaster went undefeated at No. 5...UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga, at the No. 1 spot, went 1-1 this week.

 

Other female doubles nominees: Seattle U's Krya Jung and Michelle Bader went 1-0 this week at the No. 2 slot... UTRGV's Kristyna Mamicova and Alicia Thal went had a split of 1-1 this weekend.

 

This Week in WAC Women's Tennis

GRAND CANYON

The Lopes' dropped to Montana on Friday, 5-2. In doubles, Autum Prud­homme and Ludovica Infantino lost in the No. 3 slot, 6-2. Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss were victorious at No. 2, 6-2. At No. 1, Emilia Occhipinti and Celina Buhr lost 6-4, losing the doubles point. In singles Puehse, at No. 2, won her match 7-6, 6-3. Martina Lo Pumo earned GCU's second point at No. 6 (6-1, 6-1).

On Saturday, the Lopes' defeated Montana State, 5-2. The Lopes' were able to secure the doubles' point. At No.1 Occhipinti and Buhr won 6-3 while Puehse and Weiss at No. 2 won 6-1. Grabbing 4 of the singles matches the Lopes' gain their first season victory.

KANSAS CITY

The Kansas City women's tennis team was defeated 7-0. Riddhi Sharma and Michela Xibilia competed together at the one doubles spot, falling 6-1. With Yana Grechkina out the 'Roos struggled across the board. At No. 3 Thanushree Vale lost 7-6, 6-3. At No. 5 Rhiannon McBlane lost 6-4, 7-5.

NM STATE

The Aggies deate New Mexico in a 4-3 comeback. The Lobos took the doubles point. Kaela Di Giuilio fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Gavi Kalaga, at No. 4, got on the board with her 6-3, 7-6 (5-3) win. Chloe Gavino won 6-4, 7-6 (5-3) at No. 3.

After a loss at No. 5, Neus Torregrosa was victorious 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 2.

SEATTLE U

The Seattle U team won their second straight beating South Dakota 5-2. Four Redhawks won their singles matches. Jade Lancaster defeated the Coyotes' No. 5, 6-4, 6-2. Michelle Bader won at the No. 6 (7-6 (7-1), 6-2). At No, 4, Alisa Sabotic with a comeback win (2-6, 6-2, 6-1). In doubles play Hannah Grossman and Martina Asciuto teamed up once again to gain a 6-1 victory. Kyra Jung and Bader also won 6-1 to clinch the doubles' point.

UTGRV

The Vaqueros women's tennis team fell short 0-7 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In doubles play, Valeria Montero and Ana Platisa at No. 1 and Kristyna Mamicova and Alicia Thal at No. 3 both lost their matches 6-2. In singles, at No. 4, Ana Platisa lost her match 1-6, 6-3,10-8.

The Vaqueros team also lost agaisnt Lamar 5-2 on Saturday. UTRGV got down when Lamar collected wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. The Vaqueros did scoop the win at No. 3 doubles (7-6). Lamar clinched to match.
