MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 27 - FEB. 2

UNLV's Richard Szilagyi and GCUs Piertro Hufnagel Toscani has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for January 27- February 2.

 

Szilagyi, the junior from Sighisoara, Romania, earned two first-place finishes in two individual events. He first competed in the 100 Free to earned gold with a time of 44.51. Szilagyi later touches the wall first in the 100 Back with a time of 49.09. Szilagyi also swam in two first place relays (200 Medley Relay; 1:29.76, 400 Free Relay; 3:00.83).

 

Toscani, the senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored a 335.90 in the 1-me­ter board, placing first. He scored a 335.90 in the 3-meter board which allowed him to capture first.

 

WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 27 - FEB. 2

Grand Canyon's Marina McInelly and Northnern Arizona's Emily Sharrer has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swim­mer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for January 27- February 2.

 

McInelly, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., swan hard to earn 22 individual points. McInelly touched the wall first in the 100 Breast again this week with a time of 1:02.83 which is .17 seconds than her time from last week. She also improved from last week in the 200

 

Breast to 2:17.92. McInelly also swam in the 200 IM, where she improved again, to earn silver at 2:07.45.

Sharrer, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., competed in the 3-meter dive this weekend and received a score of 308.15 earning. She placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 287.70. Sharrer also competed in the Platform dive with a score of 223.90.

 

OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES

Other men's swimmer nominees: CBU's Jacob Leahy placed gold in two events (100 Back;49.00, 100 Free; 44.84)... GCU's Mazen Shoukri earned first-place in the 50 Free (20.82) and 100 Free (49.62).

 

Other men's diver nominee: CBU's Evan Honer earned first in the 1-me­ter (298.80) and 3-meter (281.63) dive... UNLV's Jesse Cawley had earned second in the 1-meter (308.80) and 3-meter (308.80).

 

Other women's swimmer nominees: CBU's Rebeca Oviedo had two individual first-place finishes in the 200 Free (1:49.73), 500 Free (4:53.95)... Idaho's Rylie Jones had two individual wins (200 Free; 1:55.90, 100 Fly; 56.80)... Seattle U's Alex Hoeper had two first-place, 500 Free (5:15.22) and 200 Back (2:02.96).

 

Other women's diver nominees: CBU's Savannah Uhlir finished first on the 1-meter (248.40)...Grand Canyon's Sara Lameiro Castellanos had two first place wins... Idaho's Heather Carbon came in first-place.

 

THIS WEEK IN WAC SWIMMING AND DIVING

Air Force

The Falcons fell in a sprint meet against University of Denver on Satur­day. Wen Zhang took gold the 200 Free. Matthew Lattin placed first in the 50 fly. In the 3-meter the Falcons went 1-2-3, with Cole Armagost taking gold, Jack Macceca in second and Jack Zocher in third.

 

California Baptist

The women's team hosted UC San Diego on Saturday. Rebeca Oviedo lead CBU with wins in the 200 Free (1:49.73) and 500 Free (4:53.95). Isabella Rhodes touched the wall first in the 100 free (50.98). Savannah Uhlir posted a career-best in the 1-meter board (248.40). Madeline Wiese won on 3-meter (240.45).

The men's swim and dive team went up against UC San Diego. Jacob Leahy set records in the 100 free (44.84) and 100 back (49.00). Colton Babcock 200 Breast (2:00.96) earned gold. Josh Walters touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (48.52) and second in the 50 free (20.40).

 

Grand Canyon

The women's team swam hard in the loss to UNLV. Kelsey Andrusak won the 1,000 Free (10:24.51) and took second in the 500 Free (2:17.92). Marina McInelly won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.83) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.92) and took second in the 200 individual medley (2:07.83).

The men's team dropped to UNLV. Mazen Shoukri had two top finishes in the 50 Free (20.82) and the 100 Free (49.62). Pietro Hufnagel Toscani won with both the 1-meter and the 3-meter with a score of 335.90.

 

Idaho

The women's swim and dive won against Seattle U. Rylie Jones won the 200 Free (1:55.90), and the 100 Fly (56.80). Jones, Katie Hale, Aimee Iwamoto and Natalie Crocker swam the 200 Medley Relay in 1:48.17. Jones, Hale, Crocker and Emily Deitz swam to first in the 400 Free relay in 3:34.92. Hale placed first in the 100-yard free (52.88). Brianna Lucien won the 1000 Free in 10:42.31.

Seattle U

The women's team fell to Idaho this week. The Redhawks swept the 200 Fly with Bryn Lasher (2:08.70) in first, Sherlyn Devadason (2:09.15) in second and Tessa Oliver (2:11.13) following. Allison Plamondon won the 50 Free (23.93) earned a close second in the 100 freestyle (53.07).
