This Week in WAC Men's Tennis - Feb. 5

TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week

Chicago State's Jesus Perez Plaza and Grand Canyon's men's doubles team Can Franke and Lorenzo Fucile have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for January 27- February 4.

Perez Plaza, a sophomore from Madrid, Spain, went 1-1 this weekend at the No. 1 slot this week. In both matches Perez Plaza took them both to three sets. In his loss, Perez Plaza went 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7. He earned his win against North Dakota, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Franke, a freshman from Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Germany, and Fucile, a senior from Messina, Italy, went undefeated at the No. 1 this week. The duo grabbed the first win against NAU, 6-4 and their second against USF, 6-2. The duo is now 4-0 for the season.

Other male singles nominees: GCU's David Weber went 2-1 this week... NMSU's Jordy Visser had 2 wins and 2 unfinished matches.

Other female singles nominees: GCU's Puehse went 2-0 at the No. 2 spot... Seattle U's Jade Lancaster went undefeated at No. 5...UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga, at the No. 1 spot, went 1-1 this week.

Other male doubles nominees: Kansas City's Austin Williams and Jake Fraunfelder won 6-3 at No. 2... NMSU's Timothee Curnier and Louis Menard went 1-1.

Other female doubles nominees: Seattle U's Krya Jung and Michelle Bader went 1-0 this week at the No. 2 slot... UTRGV's Kristyna Mamicova and Alicia Thal went had a split of 1-1 this weekend.

 

This Week in WAC Men's Tennis

CHICAGO STATE

On Chicago State's home opener they fell to Valparaiso, 7-0.

The Cougars fell to North Dakota 5-2 on Saturday. At No. 2, Jesus Perez Plaza won 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

GRAND CANYON

The Lopes' put up a fight against NAU but take a loss, 5-2. In doubles, Lorenzo Fucile and Can Franke at No. 1 won 6-4. NAU took the doubles' point.

Grand Canyon men's tennis team fell 5-2 to San Francisco.

KANSAS CITY

The Kansas City men's tennis team fell in the season opener to Nebraska, 7-0.

The Kansas City men's tennis team fell to Wichita State, 5-1. Tom Kruse, at No. 2 won a three-set battle 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

NM STATE

The Aggies won both matches against UC Riverside and Pacific. In the first match against UC Riverside, the Aggies went 4-0. In doubles, at No. 3, Louis Menard and Timothee Curnier claimed a 6-3 win. Martin Simecek and Luis Flores fought hard to win, 7-6 at No. 2 to give the Aggie a 1-0 lead. The Aggies later in the match shutout UC Riverside. The Aggies took the doubles' point against Pacific as well. In singles play, Pacific won No. 4, No. 6 and No. 3 to put NM State down, 3-1. Nicolas Buitrago, at No. 1 won, 6-3, 6-1. Jordy Visser tied the match at 3-3 at No. 5 (7-5, 2-6, 6-1). Menard was victorious 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to close the match.

UTRGV

UTRGV lost 0-7 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In doubles, in the No. 1 slot Carlo Izurieta and Alberto Mello were winning their match 6-5 but went unfinished becaue of the Islanders had clinched the doubles point. At No. 3 Zane Kohrs and Mateo Schmit fought had but fell 6-4. In singles play, Michael Loyd took his singles match to three sets at the No. 6 spot.
