ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Chicago State's Dianna Borodina and NM State's women's doubles team Gavi Kalaga and Harsha Challa have been named the Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 24- March 1.

Borodina, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, went 2-0 at at No. 2 this week. against Green Bay, Borodina had to fight for her win, 6-7 (0-2), 6-4, 6-3. On Saturday, against her Eastern Illinois opponent, Borodina took the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.  Borodina is now 6-0 in her last six matches.

 

Kalaga, a junior from Bhubaneswar, India, and Challa, a junior from Hyderabad, India, went 2-0 this week at No. 1. The duo was about to secure a win against a Wyoming duo, 7-5 and a win against a Montana State duo, 6-3.

 

Other female singles nominees: GCU's Ladovica Infantino went 1-2 this week, her win was against Cal Poly (6-3,6-3)... Kansas City's Yana Grechkina went 1-1 this week... NM State's Neus Torregrosa went 2-0, to win both her matches in two sets... UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga won her match, at No. 1, in two sets (6-1,6-0).

Other female doubles nominees: GCU's Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss went 1-0 this week at No. 1... UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga and Sandra Putz went 1-0 this week at No. 1.

THIS WEEK IN WAC WOMEN'S TENNIS

CHICAGO STATE

The Chicago State women's tennis team dropped to Louisiana, 4-1.  At No. 3 singles Katarina Drazic collected Chicago State's lone point against her opponent, 6-1, 7-6. After the team's loss, the Cougars ended the week in a two game win streak. The first win against was against Green Bay, 5-2. The doubles point was swept by duos Drazic and Diana Borodina at No. 1 and Katarina Dukic and Susana Andres at No. 2. Borodina, Drazic, Dukic and Andres all won their singles match.

In the second win against Eastern Illinois, 4-2, the Cougars swept the doubles points again with Lizi Morgoshia and Kristina Pukhaeva at No. 2 and Dukic and Andres at No. 3. Borodina at No. 2, Drazic at No. 3 and Dukic at No. 5 singles collected their matches.

GRAND CANYON

The Grand Canyon women's tennis team went 0-3 this week. The loss against Hawaii, 6-1, the Lopes earned the doubles point. Long Beach State swept the Lopes, 5-0. In the loss against Cal Poly, 6-1, Ludovica Infantino secured the No. 4 singles against her opponent (6-3,6-3).

KANSAS CITY

The Kansas City women's tennis team dropped three matches this week against Wichita State (4-0), North Dakota(4-3) and Drake (7-0).

NEW MEXICO STATE

The NM State went 1-1 to end this week. The Aggies lost to Wyoming, 5-2. Duos Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga at No. 1 and Kaela Di Giulio and Chloe Gavino at No. 2 secure the doubles point. Neus Torregrosa at No. 2 collected NM State's second point of the match. The Aggies swept Montana State, 7-0, to snap a six-match losing streak.

SEATTLE U

The Seattle U women's team met No. 34 Denver and was swept, 7-0. On Saturday, the Redhawks were swept by Air Force, 5-0, and Weber State,4-0.
