This Week In WAC Men's Tennis - March 3

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

UTRGV's Samuel de Felipe Garcia and UT Rio Grande Valley's men's doubles team Zane Korhs and George Hutchings have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for February 24- March 1.

De Felipe Garcia, a sophomore from Oviendo, Spain, went 2-1 this week at No. 2 with each of his matches going to three sets. His first win of the week against his Lamar opponent (7-6, 4-6, 6-4) added to his win streak, tallying to four. De Felipe Garcia's win streak was snapped after his loss (6-7, 6-2, 7-6) to his Nicholls State opponent. He did not let the loss turn into a streak by winning against New Orleans, 7-5, 3-6, 10-4.

 

Korhs, a junior from Dalla, Texas, and Hutchings, a sophomore from Lancashire, England, are now 4-1 this spring season after they went 2-0 this week. The duo faced a Lamar duo and pushed out the win, 7-6. Against their Nicholls' opponents, the win came easier. 6-2. Against New Orleans, the match was clinched at 4-4.

 

Other male singles nominees: Chicago State's Javier Sanchez Pradillo went 2-0 at No. 3... Kansas City's Diego Giraldo won his match at No. 1 (6-4, 7-5)... Seattle U's Colton Weeldreyer went 1-1 at No. 2.

Other male doubles nominee: Kanas City's Austin Williams and Jake Fraunfelder won their match against their Rockhurst opponents this week at No. 2 (6-1)...NM State's Jordy Visser and Nicolas Buitrago went 1-1 this week.

 

THIS WEEK IN WAC MEN'S TENNIS

 

CHICAGO STATE

The Cougars fell to Green Bay, 5-2 on Friday afternoon. The Cougars earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles from Jakov Suler and Javier Sanchez Pradillo. On Sunday the Chicago State men's team secured the win against Eastern Illinois, 4-2. The Cougars collected wins at No. 1 with Suler (7-5, 6-4), No. 3 with Sanchez Pradillo (7-5, 5-7, 6-3), No. 4 with Pedja Kolaric (6-1, 7-6(1-0)), and Jakub Zamorski at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3).

KANSAS CITY

The Roos dominated Rockhurst, 6-1. The doubles point was secured with duos Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse and No. 1 and Jake Fraunfelder and Austin Williams at No. 2. The Roos almost swept singles play.

NM STATE

The Aggies dropped to both Texas Tech and Tulsa, 4-0.

SEATTLE U

The Seattle U's men tennis team was swept by Air Force this week, 7-0. Against Northern Colorado, Seattle U stopped the sweep by earning a point but lost, 6-1. The lone point was won by Colton Weeldreyer at No. 2 (6-2,6-7,(4-7), 10-4).

UTRGV

The UTRGV men's team competed in three matches this week to go 1-2. The Vaqueros defeated Lamar, 5-2, at home. Duos Samuel de Felipe Garcia and Michael Loyd at No. 3 (6-4) and Zane Kohrs and George Hutchings at No. 2 (7-6), both with wins from behind secured the doubles points. The team goes on to secure singles No. 2,4,5 and 6. The team has a tough loss against Nicholls State, 4-3. The doubles point was swept by the Vaqueros. In singles play, Carlo Izueirta at No. 1 secured his match (6-3, 6-0) and Te Kani Williams at No. 3 (6-2, 2-6, 6-3), but it wasn't enough to collect the match.

The team dropped to New Orleans, 5-2.
