WAC MEN'S SWIMMING ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
California Baptist's Robert Moseley has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 18 through Jan. 24.
Moseley, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., managed first-place finishes in all four events he competed in last weekend, tallying three individual wins and a relay victory. He began the meet as the leadoff in the 400 medley relay, pushing his team to the win with a time of 3 minutes and 25.13 seconds. Moseley also took the top spot in the 200 butterfly, reaching the wall at 1:51.62. To top things off, he earned wins in both the 200 back (1:53.83) and 400 individual medley (4:04.74).
WAC WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Northern Colorado's Anna Austin and Northern Arizona's Victoria Knapp have been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 18 through Jan. 24.
Austin, a junior from Arvada, Colo., dominated in the Bears' final home meet of the year, helping UNC earn a 160-102 victory over Denver. She claimed the top spot in three individual events on top of leading her relay team to a victory. Austin swept the long distance events, winning the 1000 free (10 minutes and 36.16 seconds) and the 500 free (5:10.01). She also recorded a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly, reaching the wall at 2:07.92. In addition, Austin swam the third leg of the 400 free relay as the UNC squad picked up the win with a time of 3:34.52.
Knapp, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz., swept the boards as the Lumberjacks hosted fellow WAC foe Grand Canyon. Knapp posted the top score in the 1-meter with a score of 279.80. She also picked up the win on the 3-meter board as she posted a 301.05. In both events, Knapp earned NCAA qualifying scores, besting the mark by more than 14 points in each.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Other men's swimmer nominated: Wyoming's Brandon Samaniego claimed podium spots in both the distance events, including finishing first in the 1000 free with a season-best time of 9:45.78.
Other women's swimmer nominees: California Baptist's Martha Aguilar paced the field in the 1000 free (10:37.93) and turned in a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:14.83)… Seattle U's Alexa Hoeper tallied a trio of podium finishes, including taking first in the 100 back (1:00.69) and 200 back (2:05.07).
Other women's diver nominated: California Baptist's Kiree Lowe tallied a pair of top-2 dives last week as she picked up first in the 1-meter (260.40) and second in the 3-meter (215.20).
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams for the Lancers took on old PacWest foe Biola on Saturday. The men took care of the Eagles, 182-109, while the women fell by a score of 130-169.
On the men's side, Robert Moseley was the top finisher in four total events. The junior won the 200 fly (1:51.62), 200 back (1:53.83) and 400 IM (4:04.74). He was also joined by Eric Tolman, Adityastha Wratsangka and Matthew Niculae as the Lancers earned the victory in the 400 medley relay (3:25.13). Cody Meyer chipped in as he swept the distance events, winning the 1000 free (9:56.53) and 500 free (4:48.51). Jacob Leahy also added to the CBU point total as he won the 100 back (52.25) and 100 free (47.28).
The men's divers also looked strong as Evan Honer was the top performer in both the 1-meter (343.55) and 3 meter (325.85).
Meanwhile, the women were led by Martha Aguilar and Nicole Cinega. Aguilar won the 1000 free (10:37.93) and Cinega claimed the top spot in the 500 free (5:12.14). The 200 free relay was a bright spot for CBU too as Isabella Rhodes, Jenna Washburn, Mia Maspers and Hannah Houlton combined for the win, finishing with a time of 1:39.20.
The women's divers dominated, managing to sweep the podium in both events. Kiree Lowe took first in the 1-meter (260.40) while teammate Madison Liu earned the crown on the 3-meter board (245.10).
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes women's dive team sent senior Tasmin Stewart and freshman Lizzy Mcknight to Flagstaff, Ariz., to compete against WAC rival Northern Arizona. Mcknight led the way for GCU on both boards as she turned in a fifth-place finish in the 1-meter (250.43) and took fourth in the 3-meter (248.93).
NORTHERN ARIZONA
At home for their second diving meet of the season, the Lumberjacks swept GCU in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Two freshmen led the way as both Victoria Knapp and Maegan Jensen made their collegiate debuts. Knapp was the top diver, landing first-place dives in the 1-meter (279.80) and 3-meter (301.05). Jensen posted a second-place finish on the 3-meter board, scoring 292.35. All three dives from the freshmen are good for NCAA Qualifying scores.
NORTHERN COLORADO
The UNC swim team bursted out of the gates against Denver, winning five of the first six events as the Bears went on to win the meet, 160-102. Anna Austin made her presence felt as she collected wins in both the 1000 free (10:36.16) and 500 free (5:10.01) on top of touching the wall first in the 200 fly (2:07.92). Madelyn Moore also had another strong week, tallying wins in the 50 free (23.77) and 100 free (52.77). Moore was also joined by Chelaine Van De Westhuizen, Katelyn Bergin and Saana Liikonen to earn a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:46.41). Moore didn't stop there as Payten Irwin, Alison Jackson and Austin teamed up with the junior to take first in the 400 free relay (3:34.52).
SEATTLE U
Despite earning five wins and posting the highest point total against Washington State in school history, the Redhawk swim team came up short as they fell, 161-100. Alexa Hoeper impressed as she paced the pack in the 100 back (1:00.69) and 200 back (2:05.07). Danika Himes claimed a win of her own in the 200 breast (2:24.99) while Cassie Koester won the 500 free (5:17.23). In the 100 free Emilia Culberson picked up her first win as a Redhawk, reaching the wall at 54.48. The 200 medley relay team also had a strong showing as Culberson, Himes, Isabella Guadiamos and Maggie Robben combined to finish second with a time of 1:52.24.
WYOMING
The Cowboy swim team got into the win column for the first time this season as they dominated Denver, 193-53. The 400 medley relay team kicked things off with the squad of Max DeYoung, Grant Sloan, Harry Tjaden and Austin Crump combined for the win, finishing with a time of 3:28.49. Luke Walker posted a career-best time of 1:43.31 to win the 200 free. Meanwhile, Miller Browne earned a first-place finish in the 100 back as he finished with a time of 51.90. Thomas Diaz tallied the individual win of the day for the Cowboys, taking first in the 200 IM (1:56.09).
