MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 6 - 11
Grand Canyon's Alonso Carazo Barbero has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer the Week, respectively, for Oct. 6 through 11.
Carazo Barbero, a senior from Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Spain, led the Lopes with two first place finishes. He started his individual win in the 1000 freestyle (9:34.74) clocking 55th place in the current national top times according to CollegeSwimming. He then proceeds to win the 200 breastroke (2:04.02) currently top 46 in the nation according to CollegeSwimming. Carazo Barbero closed his individual run with a close runner up finish in the 200 IM (1:51.40) a second away from adding his third win of the meet.
WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: OCT. 6 -11
Northern Colorado's Katelyn Bergin and Grand Canyon's Lizzy McKnight has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 6 through Oct. 11.
Bergin, a sophomore from Stockport, England, led the Bears to victory with a career record of three individual wins against NM State, Saturday. Bergin swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay (1:44.62) that won the race with more than a second lead. She then opened her individual run with a win in 100 back with a time of 56.88, 0.25 seconds off her lifetime best (56.43). Then proceeded to win the 100 fly with a time of 56.62, 1.89 seconds off her lifetime best (54.73) and clocking a top-100 time in the nation for this season according to CollegeSwimming. She ended the week with another win in the 200 IM (2:08.19).
McKnight, a sophomore from Kent, Wash., placed fourth and third in the 1-meter (266.55) and 3-meter (273.15) respectively against the strong Louisiana State team, Saturday. She scored a NCAA zone-qualifying score in the 1-meter which is more than 10 points better than her score in last season's WAC Diving Championships (255.00).
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Other men's swimmer nominee: Seattle U's Will Corona was part of the Redhawks' four relays that finished top five. Third place in the 200 medley relay (1:37.30) and 3x100 backstroke relay (2:47), second place in the 600 freestyle relay (5:20) and fourth in the 3x100 medley relay (2:50.38).
Other women's swimmer nominee: Grand Canyon's Emily Muteti dominated the Lopes' victories against the strong Louisiana State, Saturday. Muteti gave the Lopes their only win in the 50 freestyle (23.69), clocking a top-100 time in the nation for this season according to CollegeSwimming ... Seattle U's Tessa Oliver was part of the Redhawks' relays placing fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:58.52) and second in the 3x100 butterfly relay (3:02.11), 3x100 breastroke relay (3:31.67) and 3x100 medley relay (3:09.82) in the Logger Relays, Saturday.
Other women's diver nominee: Northern Colorado's Angeline Settle placed fifth and fourth in the 1-meter (173.25) and 3-meter (185.25) contributing to the Bears dual win over NM State, Saturday.
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes opened the season with a dual meet against Louisiana State, Saturday. Alonso Carazo Barbero led the men's team by winning two first-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (9:34.77) and 200 breastroke (2:04.02). Carazo Barbero also finished second in the 200 IM (1:51.40). Mikhail Lyubavskiy finished first in the 500 freestyle (4:36.79) and Adrian Curbelo scraped the win in 100 butterfly (49.59).
The women's team wa led by Emily Muteti who won the 50 freestyle (23.69) and finshed third in the 100 butterfly (56.67). The Lopes recorded multiple top-three finishes with Aleksandra Wegrzynowska in the 200 freestyle (1:54.79), Brittany Thompson finished second in the 100 backstroke (56.98), Maria Chatzi finished third in the 100 freestyle (52.61), Robyn Edwards finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:04.37), Raphaela Nakashima in the 200 breastroke (2:22.65).
Nicholas Gunn and Lizzy McKnight finshed third-place in 3 meter (271.35) and 1 meter (273.15) respectively.
NM STATE
The Aggies fell to Northern Colorado on their first dual meet of the season, Saturday. After losing in the 200 medley relay and 1000 freestyle, Lauren Hemburrow tried to make up some points in the 200 freestyle (1:54.78) but is out-touched by the the Bears' Giulia Pavanello (1:54.78). In the end of the meet, quartet Aimee Burton, Airam Oliva-Aun, Hemburrow and Neza Kocijan finished first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:29.00). Italia Arazanbal made up points on diving by winning the 1 meter (253.13) and 3 meter (241.88) diving.
NORTHERN COLORADO
UNC outswam NM State 167-131 on their road dual meet, Saturday. The Bears won 13 out of 14 events. The meet started with a win by foursome of AJ Popp, Emina Pasukan, Katelyn Bergin and Madelyn Moore in the medley relay (1:44.62). Anna Austin secured the distance events, touching the wall first in both the 1,000 (10:38.81)and 500 freestyle (5:12.11). Austin also won the 200 butterfly (2:08.79). Giulia Pavanello earned her first collegiate win in the 200 freestyle (1:54.78). Madelyn Moore added two more wins for the Bears in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle (51.34). Paula Nunez Blazquez won the 200 backstroke (2:05.87) while Chelaine van der Westhuizen did the 200 breastroke (2:20.57). Bergin won all three individual events she participated in; 100 butterly (56.62), 100 backstroke (56.88), and 200 IM (2:08.19).
SEATTLE U
The Redhawks opened dove into their season at the Logger Relays where the women's team finishing second and men's finishing third overall, Saturday. They clocked eight second-place finishes.
Six second-place swims came from the women's side with quartet Sammy Mosier, Lydia Genson, Maggie Robben, and Allison Plamondon in the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.91) and Mosier, Plamondon, Emilia Culberson and Anna Edwards in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.22). Second-place finishes also came from trio Culberson, Tessa Oliver and Danika Himes in the 3x100 medley relay (3:09.82), Genson, Nikki Cooper and Marissa Chan in the 3x100 backstroke relay (3:07.86) and Mosier, Oliver and Isabella Guadiamos in the 3x100 butterfly relay (2:36.88). Himes and Oliver added another second-place finish with Kalie Bui in the 3x100 breastroke (3:31.67).
In the men's side, Cole Lanting, Will Corona and Connor Barringer finished second in the 3x200 freestyle relay (5:20.73). Lanting contributed to another second-place finish in the 3x100 butterfly (2:36.88) with Emmett Moore and Eric Thomure.
