WAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Lamar's George Wheeler and Utah Valley's Aaron Johnson have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Dec. 8 to 13.
Wheeler, a freshman from Milton Keynes, England, won the 3000 meter at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday. He clocked a time of 8:14.99 that puts him first in the WAC this season and 17th in the NCAA according to the TFRRS Qualifying List.
Johnson, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, won the long jump at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday. He took first by marking 7.51m that puts him at the top of the WAC and seventh in the NCAA according to the TFFRS Qualifying List. Johnson also competed in the 60 meter where he finished second with a time of 6.79.
Other track nominees: Chicago State's Mycah Spells finished fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.30) at the Blue Demon Holiday Invite, Saturday … Utah Valley's Caleb Furnell finished third in the 60 meters with a time of 6.81 that puts him 45th in the TFRRS Qualifying List at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday.
Other field nominees: Lamar's Tate Kenson got runner-up finish in the long jump with a distance of 7.49m that puts him ninth in the TFRRS Qualifying List, Saturday ... Stephen F. Austin's Gabe Gilfillan finished second in pole vault with a mark of 5.19m that puts him ninth in the TFRRS Qualifying List, Saturday.
