WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN
Lamar's George Wheeler and Utah Valley's Aaron Johnson have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Dec. 8 to 13.
Wheeler, a freshman from Milton Keynes, England, won the 3000 meter at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday. He clocked a time of 8:14.99 that puts him first in the WAC this season and 17th in the NCAA according to the TFRRS Qualifying List.
Johnson, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, won the long jump at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday. He took first by marking 7.51m that puts him at the top of the WAC and seventh in the NCAA according to the TFFRS Qualifying List. Johnson also competed in the 60 meter where he finished second with a time of 6.79.
Other track nominees: Chicago State's Mycah Spells finished fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.30) at the Blue Demon Holiday Invite, Saturday … Utah Valley's Caleb Furnell finished third in the 60 meters with a time of 6.81 that puts him 45th in the TFRRS Qualifying List at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday.
Other field nominees: Lamar's Tate Kenson got runner-up finish in the long jump with a distance of 7.49m that puts him ninth in the TFRRS Qualifying List, Saturday ... Stephen F. Austin's Gabe Gilfillan finished second in pole vault with a mark of 5.19m that puts him ninth in the TFRRS Qualifying List, Saturday.
WOMEN
Stephen F. Austin's Cayla Burch and Erica Ellis have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Dec. 8-13.
Burch, a junior from Minneapolis, Minn., won the 200 meter and the 4x400 relay at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday. She finished first in the 200 meter with a time of 24.32 that puts her first at the WAC this season and seventh in the NCAA according to the TFRRS Qualifying List.
Ellis, a junior from Rochester, N.Y., won the pole vault at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday. She finished first with 4.41m mark that puts her at the top of the WAC and NCAA ranking according to the TFRRS Qualifying List.
Other track nominees: Lamar's Brianna Howard finished second in the 200 meter, fourth in the 60 meter (7.83) and third in the 4x400 relay (4:01.46) at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday. Her time in the 200 meter is 34th in the TFRRS Qualifying List … Utah Valley's Larissa Dabb finished fourth in the 300 meter (39.82) and 18th in the 60 meters (8.00) at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday.
Other field nominees: Lamar's Arajanee Jackson finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.99m that puts her 34th in the TFRRS Qualifying List, at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday … Utah Valley's Madison Clark finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.66m at the 2021 BYU December Invite, Thursday through Friday.
MEETS
BLUE DEMON HOLIDAY INVITE
Chicago State's men's and women's track and field teams competed as individuals in the Blue Demon Holiday Invite, Friday.
On the men's side, track athlete of the week nominee, Spells, impressed as he finishes fourth in the 60 hurdles. Along with Spells is Joseph Ogunbode who finished third in the men's triple jump (13.13m).
On the women's side, Tiffany Mack led the Cougars with an eighth-place finish in the long jump (5.16m)
BYU DECEMBER INVITATIONAL
Utah Valley's men's and women's track and field teams opened up its indoor season this weekend at the BYU Cougar I Invitational.
Men's indoor field athlete of the week, Johnson, led the men by winning the long jump and along with him was Seth Krauss who took first in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.01m. Isaac Manning finished second in the heptathlon with 5200 points while Zane Farrer took second in the 60m hurdles (8.11). Neal Berkey and Dallin Snyder each finished third in the long jump and high jump, respectively, with Berkey covering a distance of 6.97m and Snyder clearing 1.96m. Alex Lawrence took third in the pole vault (5.05m).
On the women's side, Kallie Given finished in second place in the high jump (1.66m), with teammate, Clark, clearing the same score (1.66m). Krista Farley took third in the long jump with a distance of 5.40m and Dabb finished fourth in the 300 meters.
FASTRAK COLLEGIATE OPENER
Stephen F. Austin and Lamar's men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Fastrak Collegiate Opener, Saturday.
On the men's side, fist-place finishes came from Lamar's Wheeler in the 3000 meters and Kenson in the long jump (7.49m). SFA also picked up first-place finishes from Michael Bayley in the 60 hurdles (8.55) and won the shot put (15.69m) and weight throw (17.18m) events.
On the women's side, SFA picked up first-place finishes from track athlete of the week, Burch in the 200 meters and Mathilde Guillaume in the 60 hurdles (8.74), the 4x400 relay (3:48.23), Kabongo Nissi in high jump (1.82m), Ellis in Pole Vault, Avery Ellis-Byerly in shot put (13.00m) and Michelle Ogbermudia in weight throw (17.22m).
Lamar's women got first-place finish from Yasmin Austridge in the 3000 meters (10:07.40).
