WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: DEC. 1-5
Grand Canyon's Maria Brunlehner has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week for Dec. 1 through 5.
Brunlehner, a freshman from Mombasa, Kenya, became the highlight of the Lopes' second place finish at the Miami Invitational, Thursday through Saturday. She won in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.54 that puts her at the top of the WAC and finished second in the 200 breastroke (1:01.39). Brunlehner led off the Lopes' winning 200 freestyle relay (1:30.63) breaking the school record with a time of 22.66 in the process. She earned a total of five NCAA B cuts.
MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: DEC. 1-5
Grand Canyon's Jack Armstrong has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for Dec. 1 through 5.
Armstorng, a sophomore from Manvel, Texas, led the lopes to winning the Miami Invitational, Thursday through Saturday. He won an individual event in the 50 freestyle with time of 19.30 that puts him 17th in the nation according to SwimCloud. Armstrong led off the Lopes' winning 200 freestyle relay (1:18.25) and closed his run with a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.63, third fastest in the WAC this season.
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Other women's swimmer nominee: Idaho's Zoe Froh won the 500 freestyle (5:04.07), the 1650 freestyle (17:32.25) and the 400 individual medley (4:25.71) at the Vandal Invitational, Friday through Sunday … Seatlle U's Sammy Mosier won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.02 and finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.33, third fastest in the program's history, in their dual meet against Simon Fraser, Friday through Sunday.
Other men's swimmer nominee: Seattle U's Cole Lanting won the 200 individual medley (1:51.55), 200 freestyle (1:42.10) and 200 freestyle relay (1:24.27) on the Redhawks' dual meet against Simon Fraser, Friday through Sunday. He clocked the third fastest 100 freestyle time in SU history on the prelims (45.20) then finishing second in the finals (45.85).
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes travelled to Oxford, Ohio to compete at the Miami Invitational.
The women's team finished second (1,105) just under Miami (1444), while the men's won the invite (1278).
Swimmer of the week, Brunlehner, along with Aleksandra Wegrynowska and Abigail Erickson led the women to the second-place finish.
Wegrynowska picked up three indivdual second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:55.31), the 400 individual medley (4:22.65) and the 200 butterfly. Erickson won all three diving events with 245.50 points in the platform, 255.05 int he 1-meter and 277.45 in the 3-meter.
The women also took home the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.63), the 400 medley relay (3:40.54) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.65).
Alonso Carazo Barbero became the highest scoring Lope that helped the men's team to a first-place finish. He won the 100 breast (54.71), finished second in the 400 individual medley (3:54.92) and third in the 200 individual medley (1:49.40) and 200 breastroke (2:00.16).
Isaac Poole became their standout diver, winning the 1-meter (290.45) and the 3-meter (310.05) while finishig second in the platform (288.40).
The men also took home all five competed relays.
IDAHO
The Vandals hosted their first swimming invitational of the season where they finished first with a total score of 2925, Friday through Sunday.
They won 10 out of the 17 available events sweeping all the realy events. Along with swimmer of the week, Froh, Kaling Phung became the highest scoring Vandal with 152 finishng second in the 50 freestyle (23.69), 100 butterfly (56.11) and 200 individual medley and led off three relays including the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:29.50).
SEATTLE U
The Redhawks hosted Simon Fraser for a non-scored dual meet, Friday through Sunday.
Michaela Day led the women's team along with swimmer of the week nominee, Mosier. Day won the 400 inidividual medley (4:32.82) second in the 500 freestyle (5:10.10) and the 1650 freestyle (17:46.83) while finishing third in the 200 breastroke (2:29.20).
Swimmer of the week nominee, Lanting, led the men's team along with Nicholas Imig. Imig won the 50 freestyle (21.00) and the anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:24.27).
RICK ROWLAND INCLUDED IN CSCAA100 GREATEST COACHES
California Baptist's Rick Rowland was included in CSCAA's list of 100 greatest coaches in the past 100 years after 21 years at the helm of Lancer swimming and diving.
The CSCAA named its list of 100 Greatest College Swimming & Diving Coaches of the past 100 years that was voted by 53 voters as a part of the organization's 100th year Celebration.
