UT Rio Grande Valley's Mateo Schmit and Vaquero men's doubles team Zane Kohrs and Luka Jankovic have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for Feb. 1 through Feb. 7.

 

Schmit, a redshirt senior from Neuquen, Argentina, went undefeated last week to improve to 4-1 on the season as the Vaqueros took on Lamar and Texas Lutheran. On Friday, he overcame a first set loss and went on to defeat Lamar's Brandon Do 1-6, 6-1, 10-6. Schmit then dominated against Texas Lutheran, collecting the victory over Tyler Sargent 6-0, 6-0.

 

Kohrs, a redshirt junior from Dallas, Texas, and Jankovic, a redshirt freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, moved to 3-2 on the year following a commanding win against Texas Lutheran. The duo did not drop a single set against the Bulldogs' Matthew Stephenson and Ryan Schulte, going on to win 8-0.

 

The Lopes were slated for a trio of matches but were only able to face Arizona State as their contests with UC Irvine were postponed. The Sun Devils took down GCU 7-0 in Tempe, Ariz. Wolmar Boris-Moller looked sharp at the No. 3 spot as he pushed ASU's Christian Lerby to a third set before falling 3-6, 6-2, 2-6. Freddie Grant and Loic Van Zeggelaar also reached third sets with their counterparts before dropping their matches.

 

The Vaquero men competed against Lamar and Texas Lutheran last week. UTRGV split its matches as they fell to Lamar 1-6 but took down Texas Lutheran 5-2 to push its season record to an even 3-3. Against Lamar, Mateo Schmit was the lone victor, taking down Brandon Do 1-6, 6-1, 10-5. In their win over Texas Lutheran, the Vaqueros did not drop a single set as the Bulldogs earned their two points by default. Luka Jankovic took his match at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0 while Te Kani Williams pulled away from his opponent in the No. 4 spot to win 6-0, 6-0.
