CBU'S CHABON NAMED TICKETSMARTER WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
California Baptist's Sofia Chabon has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for Feb. 3 through Feb. 9.

Chabon, a sophomore from Northern Mindanao, Phillipines, led all WAC golfers at The Valley Invitational, tying for third place overall with a 10-over-par 226. After shooting an 8-over-par 80 in the opening round, she shaved 10 strokes off her total on the next 18, shooting a 2-under-par 70. She finished up the 54-hole event with a 4-over-par 76 to earn the top-three finish.

Other women's nominees: Grand Canyon's Madison Voisard picked up a top-5 finish in the first event of the season, tying for fifth with an 11-over-pay 227 at The Valley Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Mercedes Vega led the Vaqueros in her first collegiate event, shooting a 13-over-par 229 at the Texas State Invitational … Utah Valley's Bailey Henley led the Wolverines at the season-opening Valley Invitational by posting a 16th-place finish with a 17-over-par 233.

ON THE TEE
The long-awaited 2020-21 season began earlier this month with five of nine teams already having competed. This week, Grand Canyon will play its second tournament of the season, heading to Las Vegas for the Rebel Beach Invitational. Utah Valley will also be in action for the second time, heading to Palm Desert, Calif. for the Mountain Matchplay Classic.

BY THE NUMBERS
With just three rounds in the books, CBU's Sofia Chabon holds the initial lead in stroke average at 75.3 per round. Her teammate Hailey Loh is tied with Grand Canyon's Madison Voisard for second place at 75.7 per round. As a team, CBU has the top team average at 307.0 strokes per round. UTRGV is second at 308.0 and Grand Canyon is third at 310.7.

IT'S BIGGER IN TEXAS (AND UTAH)
On Jan. 14, the WAC announced the addition of five new schools in the upcoming years. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Southern Utah were all offered and accepted membership invitations. With the addition, the WAC will have six schools in Texas, more than any other conference in the country, and three schools in Utah, also a national best. The four Texas schools will join the league on July 1, 2021 and Southern Utah will follow 365 days later, officially joining the WAC on July 1, 2022.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE PLAYED IN NEVADA
The 2021 WAC Women's Golf Championship will be played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Made up of three nine-hole courses, the course is considered by many to be one of the top municipal golf courses in the country. Scenic vistas, cool creeks, colorful wildflowers, and smooth beach bunkers add to the lure of this unique golf course.
