AMONG THE BEST
With some teams having played in the fall and a good number of teams opening the season in the spring, Utah Valley has made an impression in some of the official NCAA rankings. As a team, the Wolverines rank seventh in the first NCAA Team Golfstat Rankings of the new year. Individually, UVU's Gabe Lysen is ranked 21st in the NCAA Golfstat Player Rankings. Teammate Brady McKinlay is ranked 31st and Kai Iguchi is 58th.
ON THE TEE
This week, Seattle U opens up play on Friday at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif. Chicago State becomes the eighth and final team to officially open its season on Sunday, taking part in the Alabama State Spring Kickoff. On Monday, California Baptist plays host to The Joust in Jurupa Valley, Calif., where they will be joined by Grand Canyon and Utah Valley. NM State will also be in action, competiting at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
BY THE NUMBERS
With three rounds in the books, UVU's Gabe Lysen has the early stroke lead at 69.7 per round. Teammate Brady McKinlay is second at 70.0 and UVU's Kai Iguchi is third at 70.7 strokes per round. As a team, UVU has the top average at 279.3, followed by Dixie State at 285.7 and Seattle U at 286.7.
IT'S BIGGER IN TEXAS (AND UTAH)
On Jan. 14, the WAC announced the addition of five new schools in the upcoming years. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Southern Utah were all offered and accepted membership invitations. With the addition, the WAC will have six schools in Texas, more than any other conference in the country, and three schools in Utah, also a national best. The four Texas schools will join the league on July 1, 2021 and Southern Utah will follow 365 days later, officially joining the WAC on July 1, 2022.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE PLAYED IN NEVADA
The 2021 WAC Men's Golf Championship will be played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Made up of three nine-hole courses, the course is considered by many to be one of the top municipal golf courses in the country. Scenic vistas, cool creeks, colorful wildflowers, and smooth beach bunkers add to the lure of this unique golf course.
