TicketSmarter WAC Golfers of the Week Announced
DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Leonardo Novella and Julie Lucio have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for March 3 through March 9.
Novella, a freshman from Valdagno, Italy, led the Vaqueros to a team title at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational in Spring, Texas. He started the tournament off on the right foot, posting a 4-under-par 68 in the opening round to put both himself and UTRGV in a good spot. After a 5-over-par 77 in the second round, he rebounded with a 2-under-par 70 to finish the tournament at 1-under-par. As an individual, he finished fourth among seven players and helped UTRGV pick up their first team title of the season in the 14-team event.
Lucio, a redshirt sophomore from Brownsville, Texas, picked up her first-career victory at the UTRGV Invitational in McAllen, Texas. After a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round, she carded a career-low 3-under-par 69 in the second round and eventually won the tournament with a 3-over-par 219. The 54-hole total is the second-lowest in program history.
Other men's nominees: None nominated.
Other women's nominees: NM State's Alison Gastelum earned a top-10 finish at the Bruin Wave Invitational, shooting an 8-over-par 213 to tie for ninth among 82 golfers.
