TicketSmarter WAC Golfers of the Week Announced
DENVER – Grand Canyon's Michael Salazar and Carmen Belmonte have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Golfers of the Week, respectively, for March 10 through March 16.
Salazar, a senior from El Paso, Texas, took advantage of playing on the Lopes' home course, winning the GCU Invitational with a 6-under-par 207. Heading into the final round three shots back, he fired a 5-under-par 66 to earn medalist honors at the event. He was one of just three golfers to shoot par or better in all three rounds. On the season, he boasts a 74.08 scoring average through 12 rounds played.
Belmonte, a sophomore from Cordoba, Spain, posted the top stroke average in the WAC this week following a strong individual performance at The Clover Cup, hosted by Arizona State. Facing off against some of the top golfers in the nation, she finished tied for 21st with a 3-over-par 219. Her best round came in the second, shooting a 1-under-par 71. On the year, she holds the fifth-best scoring average in the WAC at 75.0 per round.
Other men's nominees: UT Rio Grande Valley's Rassrikanesh Kanavathi led UTRGV with a 4-over-par 217 to tie for 19th at the GCU Invitational.
Other women's nominees: California Baptist's Hailey Loh took fifth at the snow-shortened Pizza Hut Invitational in St. George, shooting a 3-over-par 147 … Tarleton duo Alejandro Cambronero and Sofia Rodriguez tied for first-place at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, shooting 11-over-par 227 while also helping the Texans win the team title … UT Rio Grande Valley's Samantha Garza posted a season-low 12-over-par 228 to finish tied for 23rd at the HBU Husky Invitational … Utah Valley's Anna Lesa took fifth in the weather-shortened BYU Spring Classic with a 1-over-par 145.
