GCU'S FEHRINGER NAMED TICKETSMARTER WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Grand Canyon's Payton Fehringer has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for March 17 through March 24.
Fehringer, a junior from Pocatello, Idaho, earned medalist honors at the Red Rocks Invitational, also leading the Lopes to the team title as well. After opening the tournament with a 4-under-par 68, she went 1-over-par in the second round but rebounded with a 5-under-par 67 in the tournament's final round. With a tournament-best 13 birdies, her 54-hole total was the fourth best in program history. As a team, the Lopes finished tied with Gonzaga but were named winners following a scorecard tiebreaker.
Other nominees: California Baptist's Jocelyn Chee was the top finisher for third-place CBU at the Red Rocks Invitational, shooting a 9-over-par 225 to finish in a tie for 15th-place individually … Dixie State's Tannica Porter shot a 20-over-par 236 to lead the Trailblazers at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. … Seattle U's Kimberlee Tottori earned a top-10 finish at the Red Rocks Invitational, shooting a 5-over-par 221 … Utah Valley's Victoria Estrada was the Wolverines' top finisher, shooting a 22-over-par 238 at the Red Rocks Invitational.
ON THE TEE
Four teams will be in action this week as Grand Canyon, NM State and Seattle U meet up for the Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz. and UT Rio Grande Valley heads to Beaumont, Texas for the Cardinal Challenge, hosted by future WAC member Lamar.
BY THE NUMBERS
Individually, GCU's Siripatsorn Patchana holds the lead in individual stroke average at 73.4 per round. CBU's Sofia Chabon is second at 74.6 and GCU's Payton Fehringer is third at 74.7. As a team, Grand Canyon leads the way with a 299.3 average. California Baptist is second at 300.2 and Seattle U is third at 301.0.
IT'S BIGGER IN TEXAS (AND UTAH)
On Jan. 14, the WAC announced the addition of five new schools in the upcoming years. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Southern Utah were all offered and accepted membership invitations. With the addition, the WAC will have six schools in Texas, more than any other conference in the country, and three schools in Utah, also a national best. The four Texas schools will join the league on July 1, 2021 and Southern Utah will follow 365 days later, officially joining the WAC on July 1, 2022.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE PLAYED IN NEVADA
The 2021 WAC Women's Golf Championship will be played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Made up of three nine-hole courses, the course is considered by many to be one of the top municipal golf courses in the country. Scenic vistas, cool creeks, colorful wildflowers, and smooth beach bunkers add to the lure of this unique golf course.
