TicketSmarter WAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Max Carmona and Grand Canyon's Jorden Okyere have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for March 22 through March 28.
Carmona, a junior from Brownsville, Texas, took first in the 800m run with a WAC-best time of 1:52.65 at the Victor Lopez Classic in Houston. He was also part of the winning 4x400m relay team which won the event in a time of 3:18.52.
Okyere, a junior from Phoenix, wins honors for the second straight week after posting top-three finishes in the discus throw, hammer throw and shot put at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. Two of his marks were top in the WAC this season as he took second in the discus throw with a throw of 51.59m and third in the hammer throw with a time of 59.99. He also took second in the shot put with a throw of 16.42m, which ranks fourth in the WAC this season.
Other track nominees: Grand Canyon's Jacob Lewis took second in the 1,500m run with a WAC-best time of 3:49.85 and sixth in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.84 at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego … Tarleton's Brandon McKissick ran the first leg of the Texans' 4x400m relay that took sixth at the Texas Relays with a time of 3:12.14.
Other field nominees: Tarleton's Alan Palmer placed 10th in the long jump at the Texas Relays with a jump of 7.09m … UT Rio Grande Valley's Paul May won both the shot put (17.80m) and discus throw (5.146) and took third in the hammer throw (56.79m) at the Victor Lopez Classic.
