CBU'S SHINTANI NAMED TICKETSMARTER WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
California Baptist's Haruka Shintani has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for February 24 through March 3.
 
Shintani, a junior from Tokyo, placed second at the GCU Spring Invitational in Phoenix. The transfer from Hawaii opened the tournament with a 3-over-par 75 but responded with a 3-under-par 69 in the second round before posting a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to finish three strokes out of the lead. On the season, she has posted a 75.2 stroke average per round.
 
Other nominees: Grand Canyon's Siri Patchana led the Lopes to the team title, taking third with a 1-under-par 215 at the GCU Spring Invitational … NM State's Karen Miyamoto took fifth at the one-day Moorpark Intercollegiate, shooting a 3-over-par 147 … Seattle U's Keisha Lugito paced the Redhawks in their first event of the season, shooting a 2-over-par 218 to tie for eighth and help SU finish third in the team standings at the GCU Spring Invitational … UT Rio Grande Valley's Julie Lucio shot an 8-over-par 224 to take 25th among 82 golfers at the GCU Spring Invitational … Utah Valley's Victoria Estrada tied for 17th at the GCU Spring Invitational, shooting a 5-over-par 221.
 
ON THE TEE
Tarleton visiting McAllen, Texas on Monday to meet up with UT Rio Grande Valley at the UTRGV Invitational. Also, NM State heads to Tucson this week for the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Arizona. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Individually, GCU's Siripatsorn Patchana holds the initial lead in stroke average at 72.5 per round. Seattle U's Keisha Lugito is second at 72.7 and CBU's Sofia Chabon and GCU's Lani Luafalealo are tied for third at 74.0. As a team, Seattle U is the leader at 296.3, California Baptist is second at 299.8 and GCU is third at 300.2.
 
IT'S BIGGER IN TEXAS (AND UTAH)
On Jan. 14, the WAC announced the addition of five new schools in the upcoming years. Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Southern Utah were all offered and accepted membership invitations. With the addition, the WAC will have six schools in Texas, more than any other conference in the country, and three schools in Utah, also a national best. The four Texas schools will join the league on July 1, 2021 and Southern Utah will follow 365 days later, officially joining the WAC on July 1, 2022.
 
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE PLAYED IN NEVADA
The 2021 WAC Women's Golf Championship will be played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Made up of three nine-hole courses, the course is considered by many to be one of the top municipal golf courses in the country. Scenic vistas, cool creeks, colorful wildflowers, and smooth beach bunkers add to the lure of this unique golf course.
