TicketSmarter WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced
DENVER – Seattle U's Julian Worn, Chicago State's Sofiya Sedovich, Chicago State men's doubles team Pedja Kolaric and Jakub Zamorski and UT Rio Grande Valley women's doubles team Isabelle Bahr and Katarina Sasaroga have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for March 2 through March 8.
Worn, a freshman from Frankfurt, Germany, recorded his second one-on-one win of the year as he took down Lewis-Clark State's Itaru Kikuchi (6-2, 6-2). Worn's victory on line one helped propel the Redhawks to a 5-2 win over the Cardinals as SU tallied their second win of the season.
Kolaric, a sophomore from Birkenfield, Germany, and Zamorski, a junior from Boguchwala, Poland, joined forces to lead the Cougars to a sweep of North Central College (7-0). The tandem posted a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals' Guillermo Gonzalez and Andy Hinch in top-flight action to clinch the doubles point for Chicago State.
Sedovich, a freshman from Rostov-on-Don, Russia, put together a 3-1 singles record last week as she helped lead the Cougars to their first win of the season. Sedovich earned her first career win in a three-set battle with Illinois-Chicago's Tuva Wallin (3-6, 6-1, 10-7). She notched her second win of the week with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on line two against Northern Illinois. In her most dominating win of the week, Sedovich took down North Central College's Hannah Hougland by a score of 6-0, 6-1 to lead Chicago State to its first team win since March 1 of last year.
Bahr, a freshman from Redding, Calif., and Sasaroga, a redshirt sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, finished the week with a 2-0 record to move to a perfect 4-0 as a duo this season. The pair opened the week with a 6-0 win over Saint Mary's Gabi Ioannou and Marina Vigil to help the Vaqueros secure the doubles point and their second win of the season. They also posted a 6-3 win over SMU's Abigail Csengary and Vigil in UTRGV's second meeting with the Rattlers.
Other men's singles nominees: Chicago State's Javier Sanchez-Pradillo posted his second win of the year as he topped North Central College's Javier Suarez by a score of 6-2, 7-6… UT Rio Grande Valley's Luka Jankovic improved to 4-7 on the season as he prevailed over Abilene Christian's Oswaldo Cano (6-2, 6-1).
Other men's doubles nominees: Seattle U's Eli Ogilvy and Julian Worn spearheaded a 5-2 Redhawk victory over Lewis-Clark State as they won their doubles match 6-3… UT Rio Grande Valley's Samuel de Felipe Garcia and Carlo Izurieta secured their second win as a duo, managing a 6-4 victory over Abilene Christian's Oswaldo Cano and Joaquin Delgado.
Other women's singles nominees: Dixie State's Sabrina Longson managed a perfect sweep of College of Idaho's Morgan Leavitt to lead the Trailblazers to a 7-0 win over the Yotes… Grand Canyon's Jana Weiss earned her third consecutive win as she outlasted BYU's Kara Lin (6-3, 2-6, 6-3)… NM State's Gavi Kalaga won her fifth-straight singles match as she outpaced Utah State's Renata Lombera (6-1, 6-3)… Seattle U's Jade Lancaster tallied a win over her Eastern Washington counterpart as she pulled out a narrow 6-3, 6-4 victory… Tarleton's Jemi Aguilar earned her sixth consecutive singles win as she outdueled Southwestern's Nina Mitrofanova (7-5, 6-4)… UT Rio Grande Valley's Lea Karren moved to 4-1 on the season behind a 2-0 week in which she defeated SMU's Csengery and Thane during the Vaqueros double-header on Monday.
Other women's doubles nominees: Dixie State's Kyra Harames and Alexandria Hildreth battled Idaho State's No. 2 doubles team but ultimately fell 3-6… NM State's Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga posted a shutout victory over Utah State's Gabrielle Dekkers and Renata Lombera to pick up their team-leading third win on the year… Seattle U's Hannah Grossman and Peggy Rooke collected a win over Eastern Washington's Scout Mathews and Jennifer Kida as they battled alongside each other for the first time this season… Tarleton's Jemi Aguilar and Martha Makantasi continued to dominate as they took down Southwestern's Mitrofanova and Emma Keterson to pick up their fourth win on the year.
