TicketSmarter WAC Men’s Basketball Players of the Week Announced

DENVER – Tarleton's Tahj Small has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week and the Texans' Noah McDavid has been named TicketSmarter WAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for January 3 through January 9.

Small, a senior guard from Durham, N.C., led the Texans to two big home wins while averaging 23.0 points per game adding 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game as well. On Thursday against Sam Houston, he put up a career-high 28 points on 78.6% shooting to lead Tarleton to a 75-64 win over Sam Houston. He followed that up with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds and three assists, in a 77-71 overtime win over Stephen F. Austin.

McDavid, a guard from Dallas, helped the Texans earn a home sweep with starts against both Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. On Thursday against the Bearkats, he finished with nine points to go along with a pair of assists, a steal and a block as the Texans earned the 75-64 win. On Saturday, he chipped in six points to go with a career-high five rebounds and career-high three steals in a 77-71 overtime win over SFA.

Other nominees included: California Baptist's Daniel Akin recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds in a two-point loss at Chicago State … Chicago State's Brandon Betson hit the game winner with 1.5 seconds left as the Cougars knocked off California Baptist, 58-56, on Saturday … Grand Canyon's Gabe McGlothan made a career-high four three-pointers and scored 18 points in a win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday … NM State's Teddy Allen put up his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds in an 85-73 win at UT Rio Grande Valley … Sam Houston's Savion Flagg had a monster week for the Bearkats, averaging 23.3 points and 11.7 rebounds as SHSU went 2-1 on the week … Seattle U's Darrion Trammell poured in a season-high 30 points, adding six assists and four steals, in a 93-77 win at Chicago State on Thursday … Stephen F. Austin's Nigel Hawkins averaged 16.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Jacks earned a win at Abilene Christian before dropping a close one at Tarleton … UT Rio Grande Valley's Mike Adequnmi averaged 14.3 points per game, including a 20-point performance against GCU, and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Vaqueros … Utah Valley's Fardaws Aimaq recorded his 13th double-double of the season with 20 points and 17 rebounds in the Wolverines' 79-71 win over Dixie State. 

Other freshman nominees included: California Baptist's Taran Armstrong dished out four assists over 13 minutes as the Lancers fell to Chicago State, 58-56 … Chicago State's Jahsean Corbett was the Cougars' leading scorer and rebounders with 13 points and nine boards in a 58-56 win over California Baptist.
