WAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
WOMEN
Grand Canyon's Atena Rayson and Abilene Christian's Ella Anttila have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 12 through 16.
Rayson, a freshman from Montego Bay, Jamaica, finished first in the 60 meters dash at the Friday Night Axe 'Em, Friday. She left her competition with a 0.3 second gap marking a season best time of 7.37, fastest in the WAC this season.
Anttila, a senior from Helsinki, Finland, placed first in the triple jump at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday. She marked a season best record with 12.55m (42' 2.25") placing her first in the WAC season rankings and 19th in the NCAA according to TFRRS Qualifying List.
Other track nominees: Lamar's Faith Outing finished second in the 400 meters (56.54) at the Ted Nelson Invitational, Friday ... NM State's Jhana Downie placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.89, second fastest in the WAC this season … Seattle U's Rowan Cuadrado finished 26th in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:31.5 at the UW Indoor Preview, Saturday … Tarleton's Nyla Barlow finished eighth in the 200 meters (25.34) at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Amanda Thrue led the long jump event with a 5.62m (18' 5.25") mark at the Friday Night Axe 'Em … Lamar's Arajanee Jackson finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 1.94m at the Ted Nelson Invitational …. NM State's Makiya Moore placed seventh in weight throw marking 17.00m (55' 9.25") and 15th in shot put with a 11.88m (38' 11.75") mark at the Texas Tech Corky Classic … Tarleton's Rylee Hennig placed third high jump marking 11.70m (5' 7") putting her 68th in the NCAA according to the TFRRS Qualifying List.
MEN
Lamar's George Wheeler and Grand Canyon's Jorden Okyere have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 12 through 16.
Wheeler, a freshman from Milton Keynes, England, won the 3000 meters at the Ted Nelson Invitational, Friday. He renewed his season best to 8:11.19, fastest in the WAC this season and 31st in the NCAA according to the TFFRS Qualifying List.
Okyere, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., placed within top five on two events at the Friday Night Axe 'Em, Friday. He placed third in shot put with a 17.71m (58' 1.25") mark and placed fourth in weight throw by marking 17.82m (58' 5.75"). His performance puts him first place in the WAC season bests according to TFFRS.
Other track nominees: Abilene Christian's Levi Chambers finished first in the 3000 meters (8:48.59) at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday ... Grand Canyon's Jacob Lewis placed second in the mile (4:14.67) at the Friday Night Axe 'Em putting him first in the WAC season rankings, Friday … Seattle U's Alex Franklin placed ninth in the 800 meters (1:54.27) at stacked UW Preview, Saturday … Tarleton's Kevin Baez finished third in the mile (4:20. 63) at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday.
Other field nominees: Abilene Christian's Will Harris placed seventh in long jump marking 7.11 meters (23' 4") and ninth in triple jump with a 14.00m (45' 11.25") mark putting him second in the WAC rankings at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday ... Lamar's Elijah Jackson placed second in the high jump marking 1.94m (6' 4.75") at the Ted Nelson Invitational, Friday … Tarleton's Alan Palmer placed third in long jump with a 7.27m (23' 10.25") mark at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday.
MEETS
BYU Indoor invitational
Utah Valley and Dixie State travelled to Provo, Utah, to compete at the non-scored BYU Indoor Invitational, Thursday through Saturday.
The Wolverines had seven top-three finishes including two wins from Zane Farrer in the 60 meters hurdles (8.22) and Meg Walker in the pentathlon with a total of 3139 points.
The Trailblazers had three top-five finishes from Sadie Edwards who finished fifth in the 400 meters (1:04.11), Ashylnn Gilhula with fourth in the 60 meters (7.88) and Rylee Jacobsen who is fifth in the 3000 meters (10:43.58).
Friday Night Axe 'Em Open
The Lopes travelled to Flagstaff, Ariz., to compete at the Friday Night Axe 'Em Open, Friday.
They collected a combined ten wins. The women picked up wins from Rayson in the 60 meter dash, Kennedy Quarles in the 300 meter dash (40.70), Kelly Moodry in the 600 meter run (1:32.11), Lilian Degroot in high jump (1.66m), Alyson Schwartz in pole vault (3.80m) and Amanda Thrue in long jump (5.62m). From the men, Jan Kral in the 300 meter dash (33.97), Bryson Benjamin in the 500 meter run (1:05.77), Max Carmona in the 600 meter run (1:19.93) and Ethan Harris in high jump (2.14m),
Ted Nelson Invitational
Lamar and SFA travelled to College Station, Texas, to compete at Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational, Friday through Saturday.
SFA posted a combined of four event wins from Megan Eichler in the 5000 meters run (18:58.89), Kelsey Ramirez in the 3000 meters run (9:49.58), Ben Murphy in the 5000 meters run (16:11.66) and Kaylee Bizzell in pole vault (4.28m).
Lamar collected a few top-three finishes and was led by WAC men's indoor track athlete of the week, Wheeler, who won the 3000 meters run.
Texas Tech Corky Classic
Tarleton travelled to Lubbock, Texas to Compete at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, Friday.
The Texans posted 12 top-10 finishes including a third-place finish from Hennig in the high jump (1.70m).
UW Indoor Preview
Seattle U competed at the UW Indoor Preview at Seattle, Saturday.
