MEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 12-16
Grand Canyon's Jack Armstrong and Wyoming's Juan Gonzalez has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week for Jan. 12 through 16.
Armstrong, a sophomore from Manvel, Texas, went four for four in the Lopes' win over Concordia, Saturday. He won the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.95, just under the 20-second mark, the 100 freestyle (43.75) and 100 butterfly (49.15). He added another win swimming the butterfly leg of the Lopes' 400 medley relay team (3:25.45).
Gonzalez, a sophomore from Medellin, Colombia, placed within the top eight in all three events at the UCLA Diving Invite, Friday through Sundar. His top finish came in the platform where he placed runner-up with a total score of 666.85 after leading the prelims with a score of 337.1. He finished sixth in the 1-meter (616.85) and seventh in the 3-meter (653.55).
WOMEN'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: JAN. 12-16
Idaho's Zoe Froh has been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 12 through 16.
Froh, a sophomore from Burnaby, Canada, led the Vandals with two individual wins over Simon Fraser, Saturday through Sunday. She won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:29.94, 13th fastest in the WAC this season. She then came back and won the 1000 freestyle with a WAC top-10 time of 10:29.06. She finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:12.94).
OTHER ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Other men's swimmer nominee: California Baptist's Robby Moseley picked up a win in the 400 individual medley (4:15.30) and two runner-up finishes in the 100 (51.09) and 200 backstroke (1:52.30) in the Lancers' loss to Santa Barbara, Saturday … Wyoming's Gavin Smith showed team spirit contributing to the Cowboys' 200 medley relay (1:31.11) and 400 freestyle relay (3:09.84) wins while picking an individual win in the 200 freestyle (1:43.02) on their win over Mines, Friday.
Other men's diver nominees: California Baptist's Evan Honer placed third in the platform with a total score of 613.9 at the UCLA Diving Invite, Friday through Sunday ... UNLV's Dima Tereshchenko finished fifth in the 1-meter with a score of 624.30 at the UCLA Diving Invite, Friday through Sunday.
Other women's swimmer nominee: California Baptist's Giulia Decataldo won the 1000 freestyle (10:31.50) and finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:08.52) as the Lancers' fall to Santa Barbara, Saturday … Grand Canyon's Aleksandra Wegrzynowska went four for four winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.99), 500 freestyle (5:11.78), 200 butterfly (2:06.37) and the 400 medley relay (3:59.59) at the Lopes' win over Concordia, Saturday.
AIR FORCE
The Falcons travelled to BYU and fell short scoring 136 to the hosts' 197, Saturday.
The swimmers got multiple top-three finishes from the 200 medley relay quartet (1:31.89), Joseph Moore in the 200 (1:54.84) and 400 individual medley (4:10.87), Andrew Limpert in the 200 butterfly (1:51.33), Jason Menninger in the 100 breastroke (58.49) and the 400 medley relayt (3:23.29).
The divers were led by Alex Kenyon who placed second in both the 1-meter (332.18) and 3-meter (291.45).
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
The Lancers split their team with the swimmers travelling to Santa Barbara while the divers to the UCLA Diving Invitationals, last weekend.
The swimmers fell short to hosts UCSB, the women score 105 to the hosts' 149 while the men scored 102 to 152, Friday.
Swimmer of the nominee, Decataldo, picked up a win in the 1000 freestyle. The women's also got top-three finishes from Rebeca Oviedo in the 200 freestyle (1:58.24), Patricia Van Law in the 100 (1:01.62) and 200 backstroke (2:09.60), Faith Brazil in the 100 (1:07.20) and 200 breastroke (2:23.94) and Amber Harris in the 200 butterfly (2:08.43).
The men got a win from Remi Fabiani in the 50 freestyle (21.04). They collected other top-three finishes from the 400 medley relay (3:25.08), Fabiani in the 100 (46.77) and 200 freestyle (1:40.24), Moseley in the 100 (51.09) and 200 backstroke (1:52.31), Jonathan Reiter in the 100 breastroke (547.80), Scott Tolman in the 100 (57.86) and 200 breastroke (2:05.39).
The women's divers were led by Paula De Moya who placed 10th in the platform (452.25).
The men were led by diver of the week nominee, Honer, who placed third in the platform and placed within the top eight in the 3-meter (601.20) and 1-meter (598.95).
GRAND CANYON
The Lopes men and women swimmers hosted Concordia, Saturday.
The women posted another win, scoring 173 to CUI's 79 while the men scored 169 to 79. Both the men and women dominated the meet. The women won 13 events out of the 14 competed while the men swept all 14 events.
Stand out performances came from swimmer of the week, Armstrong, and women's swimmer of the week nomnee, Wegrzynowska who each picked up three individual wins.
IDAHO
The Vandals hosted Simon Fraser to earn their first win of 2022 at the UI Swim Center, Saturday through Sunday.
They won a total of nine events racking up 183 points to SFU's 132.
WAC Swimmer of the Week, Froh, led the team by winning two individual events. Other wins came from Natalie Crocker in the 50 freestyle (23.85), Rylie Jones in the 200 freestyle (1:55.25), Kaling Phung in the 100 backstroke (57.47), Ani Husaby in the 200 backstroke (2:07.25), 400 freestyle relay (3:31.94), 200 medley relay (1:47.45) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.18).
UNLV
The Rebel divers travelled to Los Angeles to compete at the UCLA Diving Invitationals, Friday through Sunday.
Led by WAC diver of the week nominee, Tereshchenko, the Rebels showed depth with Jamie Spilchak paling with in the platform (535.35). Spilchak came up just short in of the top-10 on the 1-meter, placing 11th (570.45) just behind 10th-place finisher Hunter Hollenbeck (570.65) from Stanford.
WYOMING
The Cowboy divers travelled to Los Angeles while the swimmers stayed home to host the Colorado School of Mines at the John Corbett Building, Friday.
The swimmers posted another win on their record as they edge out Mines 172 to 85. It was a full team effort as Wyoming picked up win from Daniel Cumnock-Francois in the 1000 freestyle (10:16.19), Gavin Smith in the 200 freestyle (1:43.02), Maxwell DeYoung in the 100 backstroke (51.51), John Wargin in the 100 (58.10) and 200 breastroke, Cameron Murphy in the 200 butterfly (1:54.84), Grant Sloan in the 50 freestyle (20.59), Jakob Borrman in the 100 freestyle (47.48), Samuel Stuckey in the 200 backstroke (1:57.23), Harold Tjaden in the 500 freestyle (4:51. 87), the 400 freestyle relay (3:09.84) and the 200 medley relay (1:31.11).
The divers were led by the diver of the week, Gonzalez, earning three top-eight finishes at the UCLA Diving Invitationals, Friday through Sunday.
