DENVER – Stephen F. Austin’s Stephanie Visscher has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week with Chicago State Aaliyah Collins earning TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week honors.
Visscher was a steady for the Ladyjacks in their two victories last week. The guard scored 16 points in each game, in addition to recording a double-double in those contests against Seattle U and California Baptist. Vissher began the week with 16-point, 10-rebound effort against the Redhawks on Thursday. Two days later she went for 16 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in a critical regular season match-up with the Lancers. Moreover, she recorded a 57.1 percent shooting mark from the floor during those two wins.
Collins averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and four steals off the bench in the Cougars three games last week. She started the week with a 16-point, seven-assist, five-rebound game in Chicago State’s win against New Mexico State. Collins closed the week with 22 points in a road contest at Dixie State. In between those bookends, the guard registered seven points, six assists and four steals at Utah Valley.
Other nominees included: Faith Cook scored a career high 32 points for Sam Houston as the Bearkats snapped California Baptist’s 23-game WAC winning streak; in three wins she averaged 21 points and went 26-for-28 from the charity stripe … Taylor Muff scored a career high 28 points in UT Rio Grande Valley’s contest against Sam Houston; for the week she averaged 15.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game … Sabria Dean helped Lamar go 1-1 as she averaged 13 points, six rebounds and 4.5 assists in those two games … Maria Carvalho aided Utah Valley to an undefeated week (2-0) against Seattle U and Chicago State by averaging 18 points and five assists … Jay McChristine led Grand Canyon with 19 points and seven rebounds as they beat New Mexico State in the Lopes only game last week … Dixie State’s Shanaijah Davis notched career high in points (24) and rebounds (8) in helping her team to a home win against Chicago State … Madi Miller was solid in Abilene Christian’s two victories against UT Rio Grande Valley and Lamar as she averaged 15 points, 5.5 rebounds and six assists … New Mexico State’s Bigue Sarr recorded a 20-point, 17-rebound game at Chicago State then pulled down seven rebounds in 11 minutes at Grand Canyon … Caitlyn Harper led California Baptist on the road at Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin by scoring 14 points per game … Malaya Kendrick scored eight and 10 points respectively as Tarleton competed against Lamar and UT Rio Grande Valley … Collins was also under consideration for the weekly award
Other freshman nominees included: Akasha Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Lamar knocked off Tarleton; for the week she averaged 12.5 points in two games… Ja’Mya Powell-Smith registered eight points and three rebounds as Grand Canyon topped New Mexico State in their only game … Bella Earle continued her fine campaign by averaging 6.5 points, including 11 vs. UT Rio Grande Valley, as Abilene Christian swept their two games … Mason Jones secured a career high four rebounds in just six minutes for Tarleton at UT Rio Grande Valley
