NACOGDOCHES, Texas – California Baptist continued its recent run of form at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Cross Country Championships in the 2022 edition of the meet, claiming a third straight men’s 8K team title and returning to the winners’ circle in the women’s 6K on Saturday morning at Pecan Acres Park.
The Lancers scored 24 team points in the women’s 6K to defeat runner-up Utah Valley (49 points). NM State (86 points), Southern Utah (93 points) and Grand Canyon (147 points) comprised the remainder of the 6K top five. CBU won the men’s 8K with 23 points, besting other top-five finishers Southern Utah (63 points), Utah Valley (67 points), UT Arlington (187 points) and Stephen F. Austin (193 points).
Everlyn Kemboi from Utah Valley was the women’s 6K individual champion, capturing the first individual conference crown for the Wolverines since 2015 with a time of 19:33.60 to claim conference athlete of the year accolades. Other members of the all-conference first team were CBU’s Yasna Petrova (second, 20:03.50), CBU’s Greta Karinauskaite (third, 20:13.20), Abilene Christian’s Irene Rono (fourth, 20:20.20), CBU’s Carlota Rodes (fifth, 20:26.60), CBU’s Maelle Porcher (sixth, 20:33.60), Utah Valley’s Hannah Branch (seventh 20:38.90), CBU’s Anna Mate (eighth, 20:39.60), Utah Valley’s Madison Flippence (ninth, 20:40.60) and NM State’s Emily Stutesman (10th, 20:42.40).
Said Mechaal from CBU brought home the third straight individual men’s 8K crown for the Lancers, as the men’s conference athlete of the year clocked a winning time of 22:58.60. Joining Mechaal on the all-conference first team was CBU’s Giedrius Valincius (second, 23:08.10), CBU’s Arturs Medveds (third, 23:12.40), Southern Utah’s Isaiah Labra (fourth, 23:15.00), CBU’s Florian Le Pallec (fifth, 23:19.70), Utah Valley’s Joel Mendez (sixth, 23:25.30), Utah Valley's Habtamu Cheney (seventh, 23:32.70), Southern Utah’s Travis Feeny (eighth, 23:43.70) Southern Utah’s Santiago Gaitan (ninth, 23:43.80) and Grand Canyon’s Joseph Skoog (10th, 23:43.90).
