TicketSmarter WAC Golfers Of The Month Announced
DENVER – NM State’s Garrison Smith and Alison Gastelum have been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Golfers of the Month, for the tournament month of September.
Smith, a senior, turned in a pair of third-place finishes for NM State during the season’s first month. Smith fired three rounds in the 60s and five total under-par rounds in September. At the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite on Sept. 9-11 in USAF Academy, Colorado, Smith carded rounds of 69-73-65=207 (-9) on the par-72, 7,541-yard Eisenhower Golf Course. The final round 65 was a career-low score for Smith. Smith closed the month at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico, posting a score of 208 (71-70-67) to finish at 8-under-par at the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course.
Gastelum, a junior, posted two top-10 showings for NM State in major tournaments to kick off the fall season and recorded five total rounds under par. Gastelum opened the month in solo third place at the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Sept. 11-13 at the par-71, 6,026-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley Island, South Carolina, logging rounds of 69-67-70=206 (-7). Gastelum dropped just four shots the entire tournament, including a bogey-free effort in the second-round 67. Gastelum added a tie for sixth place at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Sept. 26-28 on the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colorado. Gastelum strung together rounds of 71-72-71=214 (-2) in difficult scoring conditions and was one of just five golfers in the 100-player field to shoot par or better in all three rounds on the par-72, 6,367-yard track.
