Edinburg, Texas– The No. 3 seed Grand Canyon (16-9, 10-4 WAC) opened the 2022 WAC Volleyball tournament with a 3-0 (31-29, 25-20, 25-20) victory over No. 6 seed NM State (15-11, 7-7 WAC) in Edinburg, Texas on campus of UTRGV.
GCU continued its strong play from the regular season as the Lopes won its 19thconsecutive set and advanced to the semifinals where they will face the winner of the No. 2-seed Stephen F. Austin vs No. 7 seed California Baptist match.GCU has not played Stephen F. Austin or California Baptist since the first week of October, when the Lopes lost in four sets to SFA and beat CBU in three sets.
The Lopes were led by Tatum Parrott with 15 kills and 16.5 points for the match.
Stephen F. Austin 3, California Baptist 0 (PDF)
The No. 2 seed Stephen F. Austin (24-5, 11-4 WAC) defeated the No. 7 seed California Baptist (12-14, 7-7 WAC) in three straight sets during quarterfinal action. The Lumberjacks advance to play No. 3 seed Grand Canyon on Friday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. CST.
SFA led CBU in points (57-33), kills (40-26), aces (7-2), blocks (10-5), assists (34-26), digs (52-39), and hitting percentage (.293-.075). Ielan Bradleyled the offensive attack for the Ladyjacks with 11 kills, followed by Ariana Pagan with eight. Haley Hoang led the defensive efforts for the SFA with 13 digs, followed by Jayden Flynn who recorded nine.
Utah Valley 3, UT Arlington 1 (PDF)
The No. 4 seed Utah Valley (16-10, 10-4 WAC) topped the No. 5 seed UT Arlington (17-9, 9-5 WAC) in four sets in quarterfinal action of the WAC Volleyball tournament. The Wolverines advance to face the winner of quarterfinal number 4.
Utah Valley’s Abbie Miller finished the match with 26 assists followed by Natalie Palmer with 20 which led to 59 kills for the Wolverines for the match. Kazna Tanuvasa led the way for Utah Valley offensively with 17 kills with a .314 hitting percentage accounting for 20 points.
UTRGV 3, Southern Utah 1 (PDF)
The No. 1 seed UTRGV (25-5, 13-1 WAC) beat the No. 8 seed Southern Utah (7-17, 6-8 WAC) 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 25-12) in the quarterfinal finale inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.The Vaqueros advanced to the WAC tournament semifinals against the No. 4 seed Utah Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.
Luisa Silva Dos Santos led the Vaqueros with 12 kills on .407 hitting and four blocks. Claudia Lupescu recorded 11 kills on .333 hitting with seven digs and a career-high tying four blocks. Perris Key posted a career-high 11 kills on .290 hitting with five blocks.
