GCU MOVES TO 5-0 HEADING INTO WEEK FOUR
Grand Canyon defeated Lindenwood 97-46 and remain undefeated with at least 12 players scoring in double digits. The win gives the Lopes their first 5-0 start to a season in program history. Lopes freshman forward Alaina Harper led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting, gathered four boards and made her first career 3-pointer in 17 minutes. Graduate forward Evan Zars (15 points), junior guard Sydney Palma (11), junior forward Tiarra Brown (10) and sophomore guard Aaliyah Collins (10) each tallied double digits in the 51-point rout. Zars and Harper both earned WAC Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.
SFA BEAT BOSTON COLLEGE IN PUERTO RICO CLASICO TOURNAMENT
The Ladyjacks improved to 5-1 after a 67-53 victory over Boston College in the Puerto Rico Clasico Tournament. SFA led BC in points in the paint (36-28), points off turnovers (15-11), bench points (19-13), field goal percentage (52.1-34.5), three-point percentage (30.8-28.6), and free throw percentage (68.4-50.0). Aiyana Johnson led the Ladyjacks with 18 points, followed by Angel Scott who recorded 14. Johnson also led the team with eight rebounds, followed by Kurstyn Harden who had seven.
UTAH TECH SET NEW SCHOOL RECORD
Utah Tech women’s basketball broke a school record for most points scored in a game in a 112-61 win over LaVerne last week. Utah Tech had six Trailblazers in double figures and were led by Amber Kartchner who had a career high of 21 points. She went 8-10 from the field and went 3-5 from the free throw line. Emily Isaacson had 17 points with five made from beyond the arc. Maggie McCord and Breaunna Gillen each recorded double doubles with McCord dropping 16 points and pulling down a career high in rebounds with 15. Gillen posted 16 points and 13 assists for her third points-assists double double of the season. Taylia Stimpson came in off the bench and recorded a career high of 14 points going 6-8 from the field including two made three pointers. Macie Warren was the last Trailblazer to hit double figures with 12 points.
THE WAC IN NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA DI national statistics rankings that were released on Nov. 27, Sam Houston ranked second nationally with 20.2 offensive rebounds per game and ninth in total rebounds per game. Grand Canyon is tied for first nationally in winning percentage as one of the remaining 27 unbeaten teams in the country. The lopes are also ranked seventh in scoring margin (33.0) and second in turnovers forced per game (28.20).
